on: May 31, 2020, 03:28:13 AM
I know I am not the only one on here who likes the JetBeam RRT01 and has been looking forward to the release of the JetBeam RRT01 Raptor ( :pok:comis).  Well it is listed on Battery Junction for pre-order expected 13Jun.

If you aren’t acquainted with the RRT01, here is some info on the new one
- dual tail and rotary-twist switches, you can quickly find your ideal brightness from
- 1 to 950 lumens  and 220m of throw
- available in CREE XP-L or HiCRI Nichia 219C.
- Compatible with CR123A, 16340, and 18350 batteries. The optional extender kit adds 18650 and 18500 battery compatibility via two extender tubes
- comes with an 1100mAh rechargeable 18350 battery with a built-in micro-USB port

https://www.batteryjunction.com/jetbeam-rrt01-raptor-2020.html

And as if the forces weren’t encouraging me to buy this, I answered a WTB add on another forum that coveres almost the entire cost, so order is in.  :woohoo: :gimme:

Let us know how you like it. I almost bought one but I have the 2019 version and like it alot. I guess I don't get the clicky switch. It seems just a light with memory. I prefer the full control on the ring. Just me though.

I have had some time to experiment with this and do really like it overall.

I got the Nichia for the warmer and because it usually has better than XP-L.  I do not have testing equipment, but if I had to guess it is probably 3500k and 85-90cri.

The RRT-01 does feel like it has a good build quality and durable, but I have not really tested that other than accidentally dropping it off a 3ft high table onto a tile floor and it being perfectly fine.

The light says low is 1 lumen, but to my eyes it looks lower.  The high is suppose to be 950 lumens, but it also doesn’t seem that high either.  It does look brighter than my 500-600lumen lights, but definitely lower than my 1000 lumens.  The lower brightness could be due to the Nichia 219 emitter.  From my limited experience Nichia emitters tend to have lower lumens than many other emitters and warm lights can also seem less bright. But this is with the uncalibrated MK0 eyeball and not actual test equipment.  As far as the beam, there is a nice bright warm hotspot with some good spill also.

I bought this light for two main reasons
1) The user interface is a combination of a tail switch and rotary
2) The battery options that is available with the extension tubes.

I really like the two control user options, especially the tail switch and rotary.  The ability to control the brightness by turning a rotary vs just having 3-5 set levels is great to me.  The tail switch adds the ability to set general level before turning the light on.  If your out walking and might want instantly bright, leave the rotary turned on high.  If you don’t want to disturb someone in a dark room but need to see, make sure the rotary is down real low before turning on.  The tail switch is a forward clicky so it does give you momentary on, which I like.  There is a guard around the tail switch that helps minimize the chance of it turning on inadvertently and it does tail stand.

I got the extension tubes kit which allows you to also use 18500 and 18650.  I did discover that flat top batteries do not work and neither do protected 18650s where the protection cell extends the length beyond 65mm. I tested a 14500 and a AA in the light with the single extension tube and both worked.  The AA did have noticeably less output, but if in a jam it is nice to know you could use one. I would probably want to have a spacer if planning on do but just a thought.

Because I also have a 2019 RRT-01 that does not have the tail switch, I thought I would do some compatibility tests.  The heads on my bodies are able to be swapped.  Also the extension tubes worked with the 2019 RRT-01.

Overall, I am happy with this light and foresee it being put in my emergency pack.

I hope this is helpful.

If you are interested, I do know that Neal’s Gadgets is offering a 15% off code of “NDNA” on new arrivals, which currently includes the RRT-01.

I like the sound of being able to set the brightness level with the rotary dial too!  Thanks for that review :)
