Making Buffalo Horn 91mm Scales
on: June 04, 2020, 09:41:14 PM
I got my hands on some buffalo horn sets. Had to cut them down and sand to size as they were a little thicker than advertised.

After some shaping and polishing, they have turned out nicely. They have a lovely warm texture and delicate veins that show up when they are backlit.  :tu:

Still to do the corkscrew cutout and I may have a go making them plus scales. They’ll get mounted with external brass rivets. Still to decide the donor.

A shame you can't have them backlit all the time. That would be even more awesome!

Going to use them on a old Mountaineer still inbound. I‘ve decided to keep the scales solid with no tools as I’m a little worried about weakening the horn if I start cutting slots, as they’re thin. Will keep the period design of the SAK.  :salute:

Sellers pic.

I had a knife that had buffalo horn scales.  They were so translucent that you could see the frame.

Thanks all.  :hatsoff: drilled and now waiting for the donor. Test fitting with some scales and Vic pins. Will peen some fresh ones to get a domed rivet each side when I assemble the Mountaineer.

Good looking scales, Max.  I look forward to seeing the finished piece.  When do you start making your own brand of SAK's?   ;)

Thanks Reinier, Steve, jph, Borg  :hatsoff:

Received the old Mountaineer today. Stripped, cleaned and polished all parts. Had to reprofile the scissors as they had a chunk out the edge as they often do. Blades needed some work, but fortunately the prior owner had not dinged-up the edges and the file and openers were in good condition.

Assembly went well. These old SAK are like tanks. The backsprings look milled and the center liner is thicker than normal. I was super nervous peening the brass pins to close up, as I’ve not worked with horn before and was worried I’d split the scales. But with care, I was able to close up the layers and with a few extra taps, remove a little tool wiggle that remained.

Just a few photos showing the last layer before the final scale was added, and before trimming and peening closed. I’ll take some better photos tomorrow. Overall, really happy with the result.  :salute:

Difficult to catch the graining in the buffalo horn. But a few more pics...  :salute:

That looks very classy, a proper gentleman's SAK.

Is the one side polished or coated? It looks more shiny that the cork screw side.

Thanks Pieter.  :hatsoff:
It’s just the light catching the surface. Both side are polished the same. It was a fun little project and that’s some of your brass  :hatsoff:. Glad I could give this old SAK a new life.  :tu:
