An interesting wood carved lamp.
on: July 17, 2020, 01:33:29 PM
Yesterday, I took the better half on a nice little road trip to the Canadian Carver. Here is a bit of back history about the place...

https://www.sudbury.com/around-the-north/almost-50-years-of-history-at-the-canadian-carver-and-agawa-crafts-1102104

I have some early memories of the old place as we visited it back in 1980 when we spent the summer camping in Elliot Lake Ontario. Then once again back in 1981 when we picked up and left Cornwall Ontario for Sault Ste Marie. I have been here since lol. The original owners retired two years ago, and it sat vacant all last summer. I did miss the location because it is a nice 65km little trip from my city, and it was always a great place to visit. This summer it re-opened after the Serpent River Band bought it. Now they are located between the Elliot Lake turnoff and Spanish...the last town before you leave the district of Algoma and enter the district of Sudbury. Rumours last year was that the local Batchewana First Nations was going to buy it, but I guess they could not compete with the Serpent River First Nation. Either way, I am very happy that one of my favourite destinations is now up and running.

On my first visit to the Wood Carver, I was blown away by the price decrease of many of the wood carvings. I bought the better half a beautiful wood carved lamp for 80 dollars. This time around, she bought herself another, and I got a steal of a deal on an interesting piece of native art. It was 60% off, and for 40 dollars, I couldn't refuse. I bought it because it reminded me of the Iroquois nation's lore of masks. The Iroquois are found around my home city of Cornwall. Up here in Sault Ste Marie, it is all Anishinabek (Ojibway). Anyways, I bought it because I liked the price, subject matter, and because it reminded me a little of my home town of sorts.

I was curious to see who the carver is, and I did a google search. I was surprised to have narrowed it down so easily to a Wilmer Nadjiwon. I was more surprised at how many articles I was able to find about him. Now that I know a bit of the back history of the lamp, I will appreciate is all the more. Mr. Nadjiiwon sure had an interesting life. After knowing a bit more about the man, I am shocked that I got a part of his work for 40 dollars. I mean, that is cheaper than buying a lamp at a furniture store.

Thank you.   :hatsoff:

You most certainly did not have to however.

I did not know who got one for me. I figured it out when you replied that it was awkward.   :D

Once again...much appreciated.
