Monster MUT!!
on: October 24, 2019, 10:49:15 AM
WARNING!! PICTURE HEAVY LONG POST!

Hi its me agian. I decided to start a new thread seeing that the old thread title doesnt seem like a good fit now lol.. so i have made MAJOR changes to the MUT and it is now almost complete. whats left is to sharpen it, beautify it, and rock it like the monster it is. Here is the Monster MUT. hope u guys like it

Here i'll attempt to give a close up of what and where i put the tools

1. cleaver blade.
location - sawblade
modified from a twosun knives folding cleaver model. D2 steel and it was razor sharp out of the box. Mine is the clone version, so the scales are steel and those scales play an important part in the build as u will see. had to add material and shape it to match the MUT frame.. and had to cut down the frame as well to fit the longer blade. the inclusion of this blade changed everything lol.

2. utility blade
location - main blade
Im a avid user of this style of utility balde. Love the fact that i can abuse the smurf out of it and just swap out the damaged blade when necessary. This comes in a varitey of shapes and you can find hook style blades that fit as well. I modded a  workpro folding utility blade model to fit. had to modify the holder and the MUT frame as well so that thing line up properly

3. Surge T shank adapter
Location - pin pusher
Had to add material to the spine of the shank so that i can shape it properly to stop at the MUT frame. Frame had to be cut and notched as well to ensure it fits well..Added in grip tape to flip it out easier.

4. Victorinox Scissors
location - carbon scrapper
Made a new stem to fit the vic scissors onto the MUT frame. This did not require the frame to be cut. anyone trying this mod gotta note that the pivot pin size for the carbon scrapper is different from the other pins. Its 7mm diameter. The other side is 5.5mm which should be the same for surge/ wave models

and here is how she looks all closed up

Custom attachments

5. Prybar/ victorinox tweezers
Location - bit holders
this is made from the leftover steel knife scales. It was bent and cut to shape to fit the MUT bit holder. This is the unifying form factor for the entire tool. I matched it to the sweeping lines of the cleaver so that my grip is proper and the cleaver blade doesnt bite into my hands.

The bonus - knife scales are already textured. I didnt have to do the notches at all!

This configuration allows me to still keep the bit holder AND Vic tweezers underneath. Held in place using the MUT bit Shank, so its very secure although there is a slight rattle . Super pleased with this actually lol

6. Ratchet attachment
Location - separate unit
Had a ratchet made to be fitted onto the hammer portion of the MUT. Havent thought of a good way for the locking mech but she works.

This is actually the first time im modding multitools. I do have experience in modding other things before plus im in the renovation biz. Having the MUT configured in this manner is super applicable to my work scope and daily usage. Im extremely happy that it turned out better than expected. Hope you guys like it!!!

Well done X! That scissor is awesome. You could have a little side business on your hands taking SAK tools and welding them to pivots that fit various Leathermans.

x-iled, congratulations on such an excellent mod' job! I love the cleaver blade idea; well, the tool in general. Holly smurf, that blade Is SHARP!! Must be a great helper out backpacking or camping (heck, I'd guess even in the kitchen!). Really loving the fit and finish of the custom parts and tools too. Kudos to you, Sir!  :hatsoff:

so i wanted to etch the surface of the cleaver into something less shiny. I started off putting it in hot vinegar overnight but it didnt do a single change to the blade.. it worked for the utility blade holder though.. then i decided to do salsmurfer etching with a 9v battery, instructions which were available on YouTube. and im so glad .. so so glad it turned out looking so nice. I did a fake hamon line as well to make the blade more gnarly lol.. that was painted on using paint makers so the salsmurfer solution doesnt come into contact with the surfaces i need to keep clean.

paint still intact.. this is after the cleaning off the residue

paint is gone, revealing the shiny edge

and TADA... This is how she looks now.

heres a comparison for the utiliy blade holder

That's really cool!

So   Just to be clear, I see how the spine portion that you added to help accommodate the cleaver can come off and be used as a pry devise.  So... It attaches back onto the tool by snapping into the bit driver hole?   right?

Hey so sorry for the late reply.. Dont know why i missed all these messages. yes it attaches via the bit holder. ANd its shaped this way so that the cleaver blade doesnt protrude out and cause and discomfort during gripping.

Very cool. Can you add a picture of the MUT in hand? Do you find it wide to use with the pry bar in place?

Hey! sure thing!

Its very comfortable actually...  but i do have big hands so everything grips well.. in all orientations.

Epic creation!

So let's say if I want to add the vic scissors and the t-shank surge holder, I presume they will work with the stock MUT main blade and saw in place?
