I blame you all for my insanity..
on: August 01, 2020, 04:06:28 AM
I was looking back at the first posts I made. I realised how little I knew about SAKs 3 years ago. You all helped me through this journey and now I have a chest full of Swiss Army Knives and Multitools thanks to this website. And now the only thing ever in my pocket is a Swiss Army Knife because I can't stop blowing money on them  Anyway it's been a fun and awesome 3 years guys. Here's to 3 more  :tu:

Here's a link to one of my first posts

I thought like me, everyone showed up with the pre-existing condition?  :dunno:

Maybe just me then.

But I guess I’m okay with that.

It's okay friend whether it's pre-existing or caught over time. We're all mad here.

I have around 100 SAKs.
Bought 2 more last night.
They are different color than the 4 of this type that I already have.

This is fine.

I joined about 5 years ago with a fully developed and pre-existing case of SAK fever, and about three dozen SAKs I'd accumulated over my whole life.  I was only showing the first symptoms of Alox Pox, however, with two or three kicking around.  This place was like dumping gasoline on a fire and now I own well over 250 knives probably about 60% of which are Alox.

Congratulations on your 3-yr anniversary MattGyver!

I was normal before I got here.  :P  for me it's not the impulse control problem of buying too many... It's the obsessive and intrusive thoughts.
Now I've gone mad.  Mad, I tell you!

My 5-year anniversary is quickly approaching. I had been a steadfast SAK user for almost 30 years, but I don’t think I had ever owned more than a half-dozen at a time, and I owned exactly zero Alox knives. I like to think I am reasonably disciplined in my purchasing, but I will admit to having broken the triple-digit mark.

I suppose I have a “problem” but there are far worse problems to have.

Well, I've only been here for a bit over a year  and can't blame anyone but myself.
Perhaps it was a pre-existing condition, or I am simply pre disposed to it,

Nice to hear I’m not the only crazy!
I always had a SAK (or SAK-alike) with me, but it was under control until I found this site. Maybe I’ve had too much time on my hands since the virus hit, or maybe I’m just avoiding the wife and kids who’ve been stuck at home with me, but since I joined a few months ago it’s gotten out of hand. I mean, I’ve already spent a month taking photos every day of my knife posing!

When I joined in 2009...I never owned a SAK. I was mostly into plier based multi-tools. It did not take long for that to change.  :climber:

I joined in 2012 after investigating multitools.

Before then I had "survived" quite happily with 1 only SAK (red cellidor Spartan) and 1 MT (Gerber Multi-Plier a.k.a "Mr Pinchy")

After joining MTo my collection expanded exponentially !  These days I rarely buy anything ( I think I may have reached saturation point, the "thrill of the hunt" on finding & buying a rarity no longer seems exciting)

And then some other bizzare obsession begins. I was reading some of my original posts yesterday and see that I've already found what I'd said I was looking for and could be eternally satisfied with.

Then I start noticing other things... Not even rare or collectible tools... Or tools that have some implement that I don't have and would use.  One of my more recent thought experiments is the "same toolset" groups in the mini-me thread.

It never ends.

Same here. Always on the hunt for an even more perfect tool. Or the one that fits better in a certain situation. Or just carry the Swisstool because you never know what you run into. See where I am going with this... :ahhh

Aaaaaannnnndddd then I go full circle back to where it all started

Exactly, because the Swisstool is similar to the Workchamp. And if you've ever carried the Workchamp and thought that it was a jack of all trades and a master of none, or a bit overkill when sharpening your nephews crayons... You're going to go hunting for the perfect keychain sized tool even though you already have three tools on your keychain. Four if you count the separate bottle opener.

 :ahhh

Meh, could always be worse . I'd pretty much run the steam out of the knife frothing ways by the time I found this place . Maybe I'm finally old enough to have that self control thing my folks said I needed to learn  :D
That said, the raising a family taking all the money may well be a limiting factor.
These days I can look and admire and learn about other knives,  but be happy with the ones I've already got.( most days)

Similar story for me before and after I joined   :twak:    :D    :o

Before: Had a Huntsman and a couple of Classics/Signature Lites etc and a LM Wave

After: I have about 10 (so-called) user/EDC SAKs - Maybe 150 in the 'collection' - A Swisstool and a Spirit (love em) - 5 LM (so-called) users - And about 5 LM collectibles

Happy Days

I have noticed that I go through phases with my collecting insanity bug.

Before MTs it was flashlights, before flashlights it was modified 4WDs, after MTs it seems to be car detailing stuff, although I appear to be semi-rational with the car detailing stuff (thank goodness, it is much bulkier than MTs, and if I went crazy on this I would need to build a dedicated shed for it).

SpeSmurfpillst tools (eg Brick Saw, Demolition hammer, Log Splitter, Compound Mitre Saw, Battery tools, SpeSmurfpillst shovels etc) seems to be a constant but lower-level obsession for me, but the benefit there is that I can do my DIY tasks much easier with the appropriate tool/s.

As long as collecting doesn't have too much of a negative impact on other aspects of your life (eg running short of money for essentials) then I guess it can be OK for most ....
