Cutting packaging tape

Another can shed some light on this.... Recently I am required to open alot of packaging at work. The packing tape that they use are those that seems like paper tape/masking tape but reinforced with threads, I am guess nylon? The problem I have is no matter what knife I use, be it a LM 420hc or a regular spydie 8cr13mov, they always dull up super quick. Maybe around 20 cuts and they dun slice paper anymore. I usually begin with hair shaving sharp, 20degree/side on a lansky.

Anyone can advise if they are really that abrasive?

How about using a X-acto knife? Their blades are razor sharp and cheap as dirt. Maybe that's the best option.

 :salute: I can understand a box cutter are called box cutters for a reason. But that brings away the fun part of carrying a "knife"... I am just re-thinking, sharpening error or something else.. Or its just a bad idea to use them for this purpose.

Cardboard and packing tape can really dull a blade fast :ahhh I think it has to do with some of the materials in cardboard  :think: I am sure there are materials in that type of packaging tape as well :salute:

Replaceable type blades are the go to for this for me when there is a lot of opening of packages but I do use my regular carry still if not much to cut :cheers:

 :iagree:  Cardboard will dull any knife quickly.  The paper packing tape likewise, and the plastic tape will gum up the blade with adhesive.
Get a utility knife and a contractor's pack of disposable blades.

That paper tape plus whatever the filament is I'm sure is part of the issue.  As said cardboard is pretty aggressive on edges as well.  Your edge doesn't seem to acute?  I'd even suggest going to 15-18 degree per side and see how that performs.

I dun usually cut the cardboard. Just the tape and they are doing enough damage. I had tried steeper angles before freehand but that seems to be worse for me.. Now more recently using more of the lansky, 17 degree usually doesn't work well as I use smaller blades and the stones will hit the clamp. Guess its time to look for a proper utility blade rather than something "fancy"...

Thanks for all the links and suggestions 😘. I have the mossy oak cutter just that mine is the workpro brand. And I stole that pocket clip for something else... Its a little slim and slippery for 1 handed opening.. Had the EAB also.. Struggle to open 1 handed as well.... I am picky and irritating eh....  :P
