Beirut Massive Explosion.
on: August 04, 2020, 06:37:03 PM
OMG...I just read about a massive explosion in Beirut, but when I watch the many videos...I cannot phantom it.

Here is a link to the news article...and the many videos. I hope everyone is ok there...but after watching that...I seriously doubt it.  :o

Reports here are that a fireworks warehouse exploded.

Do we have any members in the area?  If so, I hope they are okay.

Apparently it was heard in Cyprus, +100km away. :(
Hoping for the best, but it will be tragic.

Lebanon's head of general security has reportedly said the blast was caused by confiscated explosive materials, including sodium nitrate, which was being kept near the port.

Sodium nitrate is primarily used as a preserving agent, but can also be used in pyrotechnics and smoke bombs.

Outstanding medical care is once again being provided by the International Red Cross.

Our thoughts are with the people of Lebanon, a nation that has already endured so much.

It comes at a time of economic problems and internal political strife, not to mention the trial of the people involved in the killing of a former prime minister.

There may also have been Ammonium Nitrate stored there as well.

While I'm sure there is some truth to the reports of what blew up, I'm not sure I would believe too many of the official, internal reports of what is going on in a port city in that area.  I know I have handled a lot of munitions leaving Canada and headed that way, and we are not a huge exporter of weaponry, unlike many other countries.

I can only imagine how much in the way of military grade explosives, legitimate and otherwise, were likely in the area, and you'd be hard pressed to convince me otherwise.

I think a lot of people would be very surprised (and upset) to find out the things that go through pretty much any port in the world, and especially the things I am sure you will find in the Middle East.

I heard nothing.... 234 km away, not 100 incidentally (googled it )
There have been some reports of people hearing it though.

The reasons for the explosion are not clear, fireworks, welders, fire nearby have all been mentioned in the international media, even claims of a terrorist act.

Yeah, I think we will find that this had nothing to do with fireworks.

Seems as though a shipment of Ammonium Nitrate, confiscated some years ago and left moldering in a warehouse, was the 'explosive' that caused the secondary explosion. I don't think it's clear how the primary explosion/fire started.

Ammonium nitrate is a common fertilizer. Tim McVeigh used about 2 tons to blow up the Federal Building in Oklahoma. In Beirut, it is estimated that the warehouse held around 2,700 tons of the stuff.

Regardless, a horrible tragedy. I donated a few dollars to the International Red Cross. The IRC does great work. It breaks my heart to see Lebanon suffering so--they've have a terrible time in recent decades. Already there were concerns about food shortages. Apparently the explosion took out a large quantity of stored grain, imported for food. Hard times for a troubled country.

Fully agree with this.

I too have handled munitions and there is no way it was "fireworks" and seeing the shockwave that followed that blast it seems most probable that there was some military grade stuff there (for legimate use, or otherwise)

My heart goes out to the poor people affected by this tradegy  :(
