Just got this Knipex XS.  Its a little on the teeny side, and I may revert to the 5" Cobra.  But its fun to play with and I bet its got some utility in it.

How about a Proto 230 paired with SAK of choice and in my case a Cadet.

Sure are easy to carry thats for sure.  A fair amount of gripping power as compared to my SAKs with pliers and even my Squirts.  I am not always needing pliers but when I need a just a bit more oomph these save the day.

The 125 definitively provides more gripping power though. It all depends on the use case.

If we had a facility on board to wash the salty porridge off of our hands I'm sure our tools would show more colour still  :pok:

Btw, what do you think about the 125mm plier wrench vs 125mm Cobra?
The plier wrench design allows for more gripping power at the same size.

Firstly, it's a U Boat, not a palace mate. Washing facilities?

Secondly, my wallet has told my brain to ignore the existence of the Knipex plier wrench, so I have absolutely no idea of what you're talking about Princess.

It’s a bit apples and oranges...

The plier wrench, with its flat, smooth, parallel jaws, is really more comparable in function to an adjustable wrench than to any other type of pliers.  It excels with nuts, bolts, or anything else with wrench flats, but will not be able to effectively grip round or irregularly shaped objects.

The Cobra, being water pump pliers, have toothy, arcing jaws.  They are capable of gripping round or irregular objects.  They will work on nuts and bolts as well, but all other things being equal would be expected to slip at a lower torque than a plier wrench, and have an increased probability of damaging the work piece.

To summarize, if I were only going to carry one or the other, it would be the Cobra, due to its superior versatility.  If I were putting together a larger toolkit or toolbox, it might very well make sense to include one (or even several) of each.

I agree with you Nate  :tu:
Of course it's apples and oranges  :D

The Cobras are more versatile as you mention.
However, I seem to have more jobs coming up for the PlierWrench.

For example, I had to turn a radiator valve with a missing knob. They are seized a bit and hard to turn. The small Cobras were just able to do it but left their impressions while trying (on the valve stud and my hand).

The smallest PlierWrench does this with ease  :dunno:

So your vote goes to the Cobra  :tu:

While I'm leaning towards the PlierWrench at the moment... but not sure yet. I've just started testing SAK / Pliers combos.

Yes, if it to be one or the other, my vote goes to the Cobra for versatility.

If you’re on the fence, maybe you need this:

If you're a gram weenie, the Cobra 125mm are 85 grams, the Pliers Wrench 125mm are 105 grams, so the Cobra also wins by 20g

Received the Cobra XS and the Channellock 524. Here a comparison picture:

The quality of the Channellock is ... challenged. As you can tell, the jaws don't align very well. Surprisingly, sometimes they look like this, sometimes they align better. I assume this has something to do with the large tolerances. You get what you pay for  :dunno:
It has wire cutting abilities, but I have not tested that yet.

The quality of the Knipex XS is impeccable, as expected. It already founds its way into my EDC pouch.  :like: It goes very well with my CT  :tu:

‘Stitchy, I’m with you in the Plierswrench. Freaking awesome. This picture should be telling.  It’s not to say I dislike Cobras. My 10”/250 Cobra is what sold me on trying the 125 plierswrench. I could’ve stopped there and be perfectly happy. But I think I will temp fate and eventually add 7” PW and the XS Cobra.

My guess not advice is for those who have not tried the PWs...just do it. Pick a size that you think might be useful for what you do. Then you’ll know.

Wera nice Grant  :like:

The PW has lots more gripping power than Cobras of the same size.

From my own experience the smallest PliersWrench are still fully useable, while the Cobra XS could use some longer handles in some situations.

Either way I like them both  :tu:
