My Cobra XS came in handy the other day to turn a knurled micrometer knob attached to a stepper motor. Due to the amount it was wound in there wasn't much to grab hold of and the stepper motor magnets made it hard to turn by hand  :tu:

Here in The Colonies, the 5", 6" and 7" Cobras cost less on Amazon than the 4" XS Cobra (US$33.64 shipped, which isn't bad). #theychargemorefornewstuff

It's true. Once these sell more the price "should" come down. I ended up getting mine from a tool seller on eBay but they were still AU$50  Mind you, from a local store they were AU$80.... :ahhh

I don't really have much use for the typical needle nose pliers on most multis, the locking pliers on the Crunch are a multi-tool in and off themselves.

Wow, that’s some tool, Barry!

Well a courier has dropped off a package containing my cobra xs, and it came with a free bung which I’ll put in my plumbing box. I include a shot with various other tools for size comparison - Knipex cobra and plier wrench in 125 (usually live in the pouch above in my gun box), my trusty Spirit in black, a 93 Ti scales pioneer x mod by me (scales came from Oz though - not claiming I can machine those - just simple disassembly and re-assembly are the limits of my “workshop”!), and a 100mm bahco, though the one I will pair the cobra xs with is black - not sure where it is at the mo (possibly in a jacket I left at a friend’s when re-hanging a radiator for him - I’ll collect when lockdown lifts and we can enjoy a beer or two) so this shiny one from my cycle toolbox will stand in. Quite a fan of mini-tools and I’ve amassed a fee Wiha and Wera kits over the years, but buying tools isn’t really spending, is it, eh??!! :pok:

Not a replacement for a MT but used to replace scales on a SAK climber :climber:
Sometimes you really do need more than pocket size

Ideally would’ve used a vice but don’t have one so the 10” ChannelLock was used to hold them (cushioned with cardboard) and the vice grips to snap them on

Here’s the promised pic of the Knipex Cobra XS with its 100mm Bahco adjustable brother in black, and a Spartan PS to keep the theme going!

Been thinking about this thread more and more. I love the Victorinox pliers but one tool I find invaluable is locking pliers (vise-grips). It also allows me to carry non-pliers SAKs when I might need pliers, the same way that having a Classic SD Alox in my wallet allows me to enjoy scissor-less SAKs.

I just happened to come across these mini Mastercraft (Canadian Tire store brand) on sale (CAD $10 for the 3-pack, $4 each for the other two)

Interestingly, the small pair in the set (on the left) isn't the same as the ones that came on their own; the teeth are a bit more C-shape and the release works the opposite way (push inwards instead of outwards).

They're very small, especially when locked closed, and weight very little. I don't have a scale but by my estimation they're about the same weight as the Super Tinker.

I found these Channellock 524 the other day:

They are only 11.5cm long (4.5inches). Anybody have experience with those? Reviews go from great to junk, but first hand experience would be great

I am using the XS to complement the multitool rather than replace it.  Just covers a few more bases.  Everything fits in the small pouch and resides in the non-wallet back pocket.  The zipper pull holds a spare battery for the light.

I don't have a photo, sorry, but a Mountaineer or a Huntsman plus Knipex 90 01 125 mini water pump pliers and a Stanley pocket screwdriver are all part of my EDC. I have carried a Leatherman and a SwissTool in the past, but I didn't like the pliers on either well enough to put up with how cumbersome I found it to use the other tools.

Terry, I think you've touched on one of the main reasons I've always gone for knife-based MTs over pliers-based MTs.  Having the additional tools on the knife-based MT generally doesn't disrupt the usability or form factor.  Many pliers-based MTs, however, range from awkward to downright uncomfortable to use IMO.

For some plier-based MT’s that is certainly true. But there are exceptions. Spirit and PST come to mind.

Very tempted by the Knipex Cobra XS, notice they come in XS and XS BK variants, 63gm vs 87gm, what’s the difference, just weight?

Can see a pair of these teamed with a SAK Ranger as an excellent pocket tool kit. My ChannelLock 6” adjustables weigh 169gm, so a good saving :tu:

Which Ranger do you want it paired with?  I can snap a photo for you.

Was thinking 91mm Ranger but I’ve got a Ranger wood too
