Anyone made Silvertech Plus scales?
on: August 12, 2020, 12:57:47 PM
I would like to have some Silvertech scales added to a SAK, but I'd like to have the pen, in adition to the T&T.

Has anyone modded these scales to fit the pen, like in the Plus scales?

Is it easy to do? Difficult? Do you need a particular tool or just a X-acto knife and a file are enough?

Thanks!

I just compared the Silvertech scales with the Red Translucid Plus. The construction is way different!

Maybe stick a Silvertech scale on one side, and a Plus scale with pen on the other side in a contrasting color.  Black, red or blue would all look good yo.

Why didn't I check this myself...

I've got both versions on my desk 24/7, but didn't think to check them, I blame this heat...  ::)

I've thought about that. I like the translucid look of Silvertech. Had forgot about the translucid red plus.

I want to replace the scales on a Handyman I got. The original ones are pretty messed up. I might try to get a set of Silvertech and another set of translucid plus and upgrade a couple of SAKs.

No worries, mate. I keep forgetting about knives I have, too. It feels great when you come across them!

Yeah, even if I only get one model with Plus scales, this combo is looking better by the minute.

Felix Immler just posted a video on making plus scales. Not sure how it'd look on Silvertech if you just used files, might look a bit messy. 3D CNC could work but how many have one of those at home?

I think I have a set of Silvertech scales (new, unused). If you want you can have them.

Thanks, mate! I still have to think about what I'll do, looking at what I got to see what may look better together. The Silvertech + Red Sapphire combo sounds nice...

you try

I've seen that video before, that's what led me to this idea. The problem is that, while the "regular" or translucent scales have a groove to guide the cut, the Silvertech has five tabs to be cut and no guiding groove!

I’ve done the pen slot on a Troubleshooter, a while back but did the work by hand with a Dremel and needle files. Doesn’t matter what the cuts look like inside red cellidor. Since the cosmetics matter on the Silver Tech scales, I suggest a router type setup and a ball/round burr to make the ‘webbing’ cuts and needle or SAK metal saw to do the head notch. Painting the cuts to match might be the most difficult part, but I suspect most silver modeling paints would work well enough, as long as they don’t ruin the existing paint. A silver paint marker might work too.

Back scales only get those channels if they are plus scales or ‘electronic’ back scales with the short tweezer channel opened too. Regular, toothpick only scales don’t have the channel and are essentially like the Silver Tech ones. But there are also differences in the ribs/webbing in older back scales.

I'll probably just pabloed the Silvertech scales trying to do this. I think the best, for me, is to mix a Silvertech pair with a translucent Plus pair.

Sorry to hear. I might give it a go...if I can find my Dremel router attachment and some used Silvertechs. Pretty sure I have some used. Not gonna experiment on NOS ones.
