Birth Year SAK
« on: September 01, 2021, 07:25:16 PM »
Managed to get my hands on a Wenger Soldier from my year of birth. It's not holding up too badly for almost 40 years of use, which is more than can be said for me.

This is where I start looking for a Vic, Dutch Army Knife etc from the same year, isn't it?

Yeah, I found a couple on there but ran into the same problem. I actually found this on Etsy, so that might be worth a look once in a while.

I was born in 1961, as in the "Soldier Model 1961".  However, I've never actually seen a '61, and I'm not even sure such a thing exists.  I do have a '62, but is there such a thing as an actual 1961 Soldier?

I don't believe there is Ike
As you say it's called the mod61 but think it wasn't released until about half way through 1962, which happens to be my BYSAK year, so have been lucky enough to get one, they're pretty rare
I also have a 62 mod51 grillon, so I think that'd be your best bet for a 61

Same here with the search for a 66 (except for the shipping problem).  I've got a late '60's SAK and that will have to do.

Thanks Echotech.  What is a “62 mod51 grillon“, I don’t think I’ve ever seen that reference anywhere?

I actually found a Dutch one last night... But for the price and condition I'll keep looking for something better.

Ike,

Echotech is referring to a Model 1951 with the relatively scarce "grilon" scales, which are an attractive red plastic material.  I've seen these from 1962 as well.

I'm not positive that the Model 1951 wasn't issued in the year 1961.  I'd want to do some more research on that before giving up.

Another alternative, as a placeholder at least, would be to find a Pioneer with quarter-round awl and cutaway scale.  I believe they were only produced from ca. '57 to ca. '61.  Another collector may know better, and I'm always happy to learn too.

Good luck!

Thanks Myron, that's good info.  I have an early Pioneer and it's one of my absolute favorites of my collection. I also have a '57 Soldier and will try to see if this is what is referred to as the grilon scales.

Thanks Myron :tu: that’s right

My grillon is from 62 and have seen 59, 60 and 64 “in the flesh” so to speak as well. I’m not sure if every year between 57 and 64 was produced, I’m only going by Les Couteaux du Soldat for my info

The one pictured appears to be the regular wood fiber scales.
