Outside access components
on: January 08, 2009, 02:39:06 AM
Like many people I would love to see blades/components accesable without opening the pliers on the Powerlocks.  I was wondering if anyone has custom mounted anything on the outside of their powerlocks before.  I didn't have room for my v-cutter when I added a straight blade, and nearly put my SOG back together without it, but then I figured I would try and fit it on the outside.  It actually works pretty good, although you have to open the unit a little to unfold it.  The bolt is long enough to allow the extra component on the outside, and so far hasn't loosened (it's been over a week now).  I recommend it for those that never have enough room for available options.  It's just too bad it doesn't lock, but the v-cutter performs fine with no lock (not recommended for a blade obviously!)

cheers guys.

Thanks guys, here's some pics.  Now I just need to figure out something for the other leg.  So far it seems the V-cut is the only component that is user-friendly without a lock.

The unit only has to open a little less than this to deploy the V-cutters.

I was thinking, since the blades are chisel ground maybe I could put a blade on the outside like a serrated blade! I'd have to think of a way to keep it there though..

I would be very warey of putting anything sharp or poky on the outside, since it does move around a little.  It is contained by the locking mech, but shifts because you can't have it too tight, or else all your other implements will be tight.  So, chisel ground or not, I think a blade would be too risky, especially when using the pliers.  Besides, it's only a matter of time when SOG will come out with LM Wave style blades.

Thanks for the compliments, and I hope people get something out of it.

cheers

Put a pocket clip on the outside and use a ranger band to keep the tool closed when it is clipped to your pocket or belt.

This is interesting...but what is a ranger band?  And I think I prefer using a sheath, rather than clipping to my belt.

A "ranger band" is a wide rubber band made by cutting a section from an inner tube.
