And last but not least, Wild Man...

I'm going for a bit of a weird choice here...

My Wild Man does not go to unexplored parts of the world, he does not go days without seeing a living soul.  But what he does do is bring the feel of "every man's adventure" into the living room by the shows he makes.

The man I'm talking about is Arnout Hauben, a Flemish TV producer who got "famous" by his show "Ten Oorlog" ("to War"), in which he, and two of his friends, hiked the entire front line of World War I on foot, from Nieuwpoort on the Belgian coast to Gallipoli in Turkey.  Passing the battlefields of the Somme, trenches in slovenia and lots of other sites on their way.  The show consisted of 9 episodes of which one was shown every week, and I can honestly say it was one of the only things on TV I never missed.  In every episode they took the time to tell a story from a soldier his last hours, using letters he send home to his parents or wife, and field reports from the day he died.  And after that, they placed a white cross on the spot where he was killed (using a Wave to screw the cross together).  They also collected cans of dirt from various battlegrounds, which they gave to children or grand children from the soldiers.

In the second season of "Ten Oorlog", they followed the path of the allied forces from Normandy (actually, they start in London) to Berlin, and in part two of that season the path of the Red Army from Stalingrad to Berlin, all on foot.

And last year he (and two other companions) walked around the North Sea, which once again was a beautiful TV Show.

Like I said, no unexplored stuff, no man vs wild, but he does bring that adventure/vacation feeling straight into the livingroom, the feeling of adventure from doing such a trip on foot, combined with a lot of great history and stories from people he meets along the way.  He makes an awesome TV show, very soothing, great scenery, great stories, with nice music here and there ...

Sadly enough, there's not much I can find about the series on youtube (I do own the DVD boxes of both "To War" seasons, but I don't think they would like me to upload them to youtube...), here are a couple of videos I did find, first one is a commercial for buying the DVD box of Season one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbvM8Ui_LWw&list=PL5va3iVtgbrjcPyFEIfOha0i21HrRzXLX

And another one (and no, the episodes are not filmed at 240p  ::)).

And here's one clip to promote their "around the North Sea" series:

And here's a clip from an episode he made about the V1 and V2 attacks in Flanders during World War 2:

I hope this counts as "Wild Man", if not, I have a back-up plan ready  ;).

Great entry! He gets Wild Man credit for doing it all on foot.  :tu:

It sounds like the kind of show I would really enjoy. I'm a bit of a history buff and have thought about doing a trip to trace a military unit through the ETO.

DVD's have English subtitles?

As a History buff myself I can say I really enjoy his shows.  I've mentioned this before, I try to visit one of the Belgian Battlegrounds (be it WWI or WWII) at least once a year, if you ever plan on visiting Belgium and want to see Bastogne for example, contact me and you'll have transport and a guide (make that two guides, since I'm quite sure Nick will invite himself as well  :D).

I'll try and check the DVD's this evening, and if they do have English subtitles I'll have a look if they are still available (and how much they cost these days)  ;).

And bonus points for getting number 46  :D.

My favorite number 24 was not going to happen, since I had to wait for my laptop, but getting number 46 is also great (yes, I'm a Rossi fan  :P).

Should I invite myself??

I'd expect an invitation... At least...

As if you would give me a choice ...  ::)

What do you mean by, an invitation at least ?  What does the "at least" part stands for?  Should I send a Limo to pick you up or something ?

Just add a knife or more to the invitation...

So, you explain the "at least" part, but your answer is then followed by "or more" ... ?

What could you possibly want more when you already got an invitation and a knife ... ?

My apologies Nix, two Belgians have arrived and your beautiful topic is going downhill ...

Let me tell you a story.

When the Europeans got to Australia, they did what Europeans generally did on encountering pretty land and friendly locals without effective weaponry...

then after that, they got to the busy work of trying to work out what the hell was going on around them.

Mostly that meant a lot of walking.

Walking was hard work, but Australia had no shortage of prisoners at the time, so you could do handy things like pop them on a boat, sail until you got bored, kick them off, then say "If you can find your way back to town and tell us about all the land you had to walk over, we'll give you a piece of paper that says you are free"

They didn't get the results that were desired, and for a few years no one had any bloody idea what was happening south of Sydney. There was some argument as to whether or not anyone cared (An argument that continues to this day)

Anyway, it was a fine Spring afternoon, and two mates, Hamo and Bill, were throwing back tins and discussing the big questions, as you do, and Hamo said to Bill "You won't pick up sticks and trek down to the bottom of the island"

and Bill replied "Like hell I won't!"

So that was that, the next day they rounded up some horses, borrowed a tent (made by the charmingly boasting "Australia's first Purpose-Built Female Factory", which, despite the potentially deceptive name, did not in fact make females, so much as use female convicts to make cloth and whatnot), and set off, with a bunch of other sods who owed them money, or had recently had a fight with the wife and needed a few days out of the house.

And off they went.

Now, the first few hundred kms south of sydney is astonishingly boring, then after that there's a river (someone had seen this river before, and had remarked how odd it was that there was a dog on tuckerbox guarding it) so they were ready for it.

The next few hundred kms is almost as boring as the first, but then - Mountains! (The mountains actually start well north of Sydney, but given that they run more or less the entire length of the land, and there's various plateaus and whatnot, if you're on foot, and not paying attention, it's easy to end up on the wrong side of them)

So, our mates Hamo and Bill walked over the mountains, and in the way that these things go when you're walking in mountains they got a bit jack-knifed and end up falling off the western side instead of the southern side and wandering about in the clean crisp air of the southern highlands...

and as you often do near mountains, they found a river!

It was deep, and wide, and not terribly fast but fast enough to be worrisome. There was a bit of blue, but after robust discussion, they decided to cross it.

On the other side of the river is what is (in 2020) known as the Plaguelands, but at the time they called it Victoria, and thought it was fine english countryside, complete with smurfty weather, endlessly overcast days, and really big rabbits.

That's neither here nor there.

It was about now that Hamo felt he needed a legacy, something to remind people about his big walk, so he named it the Hume River.

(They then kept wandering south, climbed a mountain, hoping to see the south coast - they couldn't because the mountain was
A. Densely Forested
and
B. On fire.

so they named it Mount Disappointment and found another path to try to walk to melbourne.

So, why, all these years later, can't you find the Hume River?

Well, it turns out the river they discovered is, along it's entire length and tributories, smurfin' huge.

It runs from the mountains on the east coast, collects water from rivers coming down from highlands around it, and for reasons known only to itself, heads west across the country, collecting more tributories from the even more astonishingly boring hay plains, and then gets within spitting distance of Adelaide, where even it doesn't want to visit, so takes a sharp turn south and into the ocean.

All of that means it got discovered several times....

About six years later, Chuck Sturt, who it would appear is much better at getting things named, went on a stroll of his own, and instead of walking through the mountains, he decided to follow the same river that Hamo and Bill crossed (after giving the dog on a tuckerbox a pat, as is tradition) and eventually that river joined the Hume river.

'Cor blimey! said Sturt, and, as was tradition at the time, he named it after some bloke he owed money to, in lieu of actual payment.

Geoff Murray (or something)

(Chuck and Hamo teamed up at some point, on a west-ward bound walking expedition, and had a crack at naming the Darling river.

I imagine they would have been pissed when they found out that it eventually joins up to the Murray/Hume (I'm sure they bickered on this) in South Australia.

Now, for those following my adventures, I travel a bit across this land, particularly the SE corner, and that means I spend a lot of my time crossing rivers!

so, today's picture, is from a day on the river!, and around here (here being a chunk of the continent several thousand kms2 in area) when you say The River, you really only mean one thing!

That is one heck of a drainage.

And, cor blimey, there really is a dog on a tucker box!   :ahhh

I recall watching an old TV show by painter Jack Absalom (?) where he traced Sturt's path of discovery. I don't remember a thing about it now, but there was a river involved. And Jack was a charming character himself. I think the dog on Tucker box got left out, though..... No wonder the show didn't do all that well......

Thanks for the reminder!  :like:

I'll have to add these two as the Wildeness knife category.

The '08 Soldier is my choice for all tasks when going out of the urban enviroment. It just has everything I need and works. While it might be a bit scary for some people, that doesn't bother me one bit.

The Hunter is Mrs. Styx's preferred choice as she predominantly uses it for food prep. And I do have to admit that the thin straight blade really does cut bacon and tomatoes extremely well. And the locking mechanism isn't complex or frightening

Solving problems you didn't know you had in the most obscure way possible

"And now, it's time to hand this over to our tame race axe driver. Some say, he can live in the forest for six months at a time without food, and he knows of a secret tribe of only women where he is their God. All we know is, he's call the Styx!" - TazzieRob

More and more the SAKs in the 111mm - 130mm size have become my Wilderness knives.  I find that size to be suitable for 99% of my outdoors needs.

I've always been a fixie man, but the 111mm Outrider and the 130mm Rangerwood 55 have really won me over.  :tu:

This story takes place in the Swiss Alps, back in 2015.

.....

In 2015, we (Misses TG-24, myself and our two boys), my parents and my brother with his girlfriend all went on vacation to Switzerland together, we stayed in a hotel on the shores of Lake Lucerne, which, completely coincidentally, just happened to be close to Ibach and the Home of Victorinox (completely coincidentally, like I said ...).

On our first day there, my father came up with a suggestion to visit Mount Titlis, his brother (my uncle) told him the hike down from mount Titlis to the valley was beautiful, and we had to do it.

Quite the adventure, TG!

I was in the Swiss Alps in September 2015! Unfortunately, we were on a bus tour so hiking chances were virtually non existent. Best I did was walk around the lake in Engelberg which is where we stayed, and took the cable cars up and down Mt Titlis. I bought my Victorinox Explorer in the shop at the top.
As we were headed into Switzerland our guide was saying how great Swiss Army Knives were (I was already carrying 2... Cadet and Minichamp). She had maybe a Spartan with the dullest blade ever. I also had a Fallkniven DC3 with me, so I sharpened it back up for her.
I told her about how the Victorinox factory was in Ibach, and she was like - "Oh, it's so close! But we don't have time to go." I'm sure if there had been some leeway in the schedule, she'd have been keen, and she did think about if it was even possible to make it work.

Engelberg was nice, it was overcast most of the time there, but the top of the mountain was clear. Would love to go back to Europe.

For my third and final entry for this thread, I'll briefly relate the tale of Hugh Glass.

The year was 1823.  While on a fur trapping expedition in what is now South Dakota, USA, Glass had the misfortune of tangling with a bear.  Though Glass and his party ultimately killed the bear, Glass was grievously wounded.  The party carried Glass on a litter for several days, but this greatly hampered their progress.

Convinced Glass would soon succumb to his injuries, two volunteers were solicited to stay with him until he died.  They were then to give him a proper burial, and catch up with the rest of the party, which would continue on ahead.

Another day or two passed.  Fearing attack by natives and certain Glass was near death, the two volunteers made what must have been a wrenching decision to leave him and strike out after the rest of the trapping party (to whom they would falsely report Glass's demise).

So it came to pass that when, against all odds, Glass regained consciousness, he found himself alone; still seriously injured; bereft of weapons, gear, or supplies; and more than 200 miles from the nearest friendly settlement at Fort Kiowa (which was located somewhat near present-day Chamberlain, South Dakota).  With an iron will, Glass began his trek, treating his own wounds as best he could as he went.  Initially, due to his injuries, he was only able to crawl, though later in the trip he was able to walk and even take advantage of the Cheyenne River to float for part of the trip.  He arrived at Fort Kiowa six weeks after starting his painful solitary journey, during which time he subsisted primarily on roots and berries.

Later, Glass reportedly tracked down both of the men who had left him for dead, but for various reasons he didn't take revenge on either of them.

It is sometimes difficult to separate fact from myth.  However, even if some of the details have been exaggerated, Hugh Glass definitely qualifies as a Wild Man and all-around tough guy.  His story has been the basis for a number of books and movies, most recently 2015's The Revenant, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio as Hugh Glass and took the typical liberal Hollywood amount of artistic liberty with the story.

Wild Man: Cândido Rondon

Marshal Cândido Mariano da Silva Rondon (5 May 1865 – 19 January 1958) was a Brazilian military officer most famous for his telegraph commission and exploration of Mato Grosso and the Western Amazon Basin, as well as his lifelong support for indigenous Brazilians. He was the first director of Brazil's Indian Protection Service or SPI (later FUNAI) and supported the creation of the Xingu National Park. The Brazilian state of Rondônia is named after him.
As a result of Rondon's competence in constructing telegraph lines, he was put in charge of extending the telegraph line from Mato Grosso to the Amazon. In the course of constructing the line, he charted the Juruena river (an important tributary of the Tapajós river in northern Mato Grosso) and, in addition, he made peaceful contact with the Nambikwara tribe, which had until then killed all Westerners they had come in contact with. He also (in 1911) visited the ruins of the eighteenth century Real Forte Príncipe da Beira, the greatest historical relic of Rondônia, which had been abandoned in 1889, and was promoted as major of the Corps of Military Engineers, responsible for building the Cuiabá telegraph line to Santo Antonio do Madeira, the first to reach the Amazon region, which was called the "Rondon Commission". His works developed from 1907 to 1915. At the same time, the Madeira-Mamoré Railroad was being built, which together with the Rondon telegraphic exploration and integration helped to occupy the region of the present state of Rondônia.

In May 1909, Rondon went on his longest expedition. He set out from the settlement of Tapirapuã in northern Mato Grosso heading northwest to meet up with the Madeira river, which is a major tributary of the Amazon River. By August, the party had eaten all of its supplies, and had to subsist on what they could hunt and gather from the forest. By the time they reached the Ji-Paraná River, they had no supplies. During their expedition they discovered a large river between the Juruena, and Ji-Paraná river, which Rondon named the River of Doubt. To reach the Madeira, they built canoes, and reached the Madeira on Christmas Day, 1909.

When Rondon reached Rio de Janeiro, he was hailed as a hero, because it was believed that he and the expedition had died in the jungle. After the expedition, he became the first director of the Brazilian Government's Indian Protection Agency, or the SPI.

In September 1913, Rondon was struck by a poisoned arrow from the Nambikwara Indians.
The 52nd meridian west is also a geographical reference for the history of communications in Brazil. Rondon was the second human being to receive in his honor a meridian in his name. He fulfilled missions by opening roads, clearing lands, launching telegraph lines, mapping the land, and establishing cordial relations with the Indians. He maintained contact with several indigenous peoples.
In January 1914, Rondon left with Theodore Roosevelt on the Roosevelt-Rondon Scientific Expedition, whose aims were to explore the River of Doubt. The expedition left the Tapiripuã, and reached the River of Doubt on 27 February 1914. They did not reach the mouth of the river until late April, after the expedition had suffered greatly. During the expedition, the river was renamed the Rio Roosevelt.

The Adventure down the River of Doubt was the most difficult of Roosevelt's life. All the men except Rondon suffered from ailments and constant maladies.
Today the River of Doubt is named River Roosevelt.

Cândido Rondon is a very important character in brazilian history
He also had his face in banknotes (now discontinued) and as said before have a state named in his honour.

Wilderness knife.

Victorinox Ranger.

This one travelled with me thousands of kilometers from all over country.
From beaches to mountains, from helping at my work  or just to open a snack in the hotel after a hard day.

This one never let me down. My favorite is the trail guide, but the ranger is my travel companion.
