Crazy Gold Scaled Luxury Automobile
on: September 13, 2020, 01:05:37 AM
Check this one out.  A good friend of mine recently found it in his local knife emporium and paid $18 for it.  I helped him ID it as a Luxury Automobile, which was tricky since the LNF was hiding, as they so often do.  :)

He did a little research into the hallmarks impressed into the metal scales and discovered that 375 is 9ct gold, italic “k” is 1966, cat head is London assay office. He's still looking for the maker’s mark, which is either “P&R” or “R&R”.    Anybody know that one?

Wow. That’s a cool find for your friend.

Many thanks for the date info and tying the wood saw to that period (‘66).

Cool find indeed, Myron.

I used to have a passing interest in British hallmarks (I was an avid pipe enthusiast, and my wife dabbles in tableware), but a quick check of my meager  resources came up empty, other than the information you’d already found.

I did learn you can send a query to the London assay office at:

registration@assayofficelondon.co.uk

According to their website there are legal restrictions that limit the information they can provide on late 20th century makers, but it can’t hurt to ask.

So, I’m the lucky friend! Big thanks to Myron for posting and asking y’all for info.

After a bit of looking around, I think I’ve found the maker: Ramsden & Roen, who operated out of London from 1929 to 1976 and made gold trinkets like ash trays, boxes, cigar cutters, cigarette cases, etc. Seems very plausible that they would’ve made these scales and sold the knife in their shop.

Anyone ever seen one like this before??

I think that might be the very definition of a “one-off.”

Nice find, Myron! I believe 9ct gold is a bit of a British speciality as not many other places rate it as gold, well 37.5% is a low content!! Yard-o-led and Parker England also used to speSmurfpillse in 9ct mechanical pencils and pens (I’ve not managed to find one cheap enough to add to my collections yet!), but I do have several pairs of 9ct cuff links, though they don’t get much use these days! Cool find! :like: :like:

Looks right to me too.  :tu:

Awesome gold scales aside that's still a rare model of SAK to find.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Wow, that's a beauty and a bargain!

If the LNF is hiding but the blade and scissors open from the same side you know it should be there :)
You should seriously visit vicfan.com. All the hoopy froods are doing it.
