Sog leather sheath
on: January 09, 2009, 08:15:11 AM
I've gone a little nutso since joining this forum.  Why am I buying more pliers?  I ended up visiting a store in Vancouver yesterday and bought a couple of their Sog's.
Both these units came with the standard leather sheaths.  Great quality, and very nicely put together, thick and well stitched.
The only minor complaint is that I find they "ride a little high" on the belt and with that a little uncomfortable pushing a bit into my side.  It's a minor one and I'm sure one could get used to it but it's definitely noticeable with my build.
Has anyone done any modifications to theirs with respect to the above issue?
I could go to a Nylon sheath but hate to see those original one's collect dust in my closet.

thanks,
Sean

I did mod my SOG sheath by adding a metal pants/belt clip for beltless carrying. I haven't carried it enough to notice how it rides, but will check.

Regards, Bill.

I remember a complaint about their sheaths smelling funny, mine
did (a little) but it's fine now, and I like it. I'm sure they can be
modified, you could ask a sheath maker.

See the thread entitled Simple adapters lets holster ride lower on belt.

Mine don’t smell funny, just smells leather. As for it riding high………..Sometimes it feels it does and sometimes it don’t. The one thing I do not like (at least when it’s new) is that the leather is pretty stiff and I find myself closing the flap all the time because it have mysteriously opened. The belt loop is also very big so you can use belts that are a bit wide, most tactical belts are wide, so when I use “normal” belts it travel up so I have too push it down.  Butt the sheath is very nice, classy, and can take a hell of a beating. The thing I like about the nylon sheath is that you can carry it vertical and horizontal.
There is no problem that cannot be solved by the use of high explosives.

Yeah, that's what I also didn't like about it.  That, plus that knife-bullet logo... looks like a shark fin.  I actually traded my leather sheath to my brother for a brand new nylon one.

Yep, the smell in my SOG´s sheath is stronger than that in the leather ones of my Spirit or old Wave, might be something about the treatment of the leather...
