1) Did you really think you could trust Mechy?

2) You say that like it's a bad thing......

wow, there really is a knot for everything. :ahhh

I like to learn knots that can be used for multiple purposes.  As Enki says its a great way to exclude a damaged section with out cutting and having the tie the cut ends back together.  There are a few ways to tie the knot but the "twist" way is easiest for me.

Here's are pretty good video.
...

I know that way of tying it but find the other method easier, especially if you're hanging on that same rope. :ahhh

I tie it like this, ... three loops around your hand, then the middle one goes under  ...  over  ...  under ... and tighten it.

I've always tied it the way Aloha ties it. Somehow easier for me to remember. But I like your method a bit better.  :tu:

:tu:  Thats a great way.  I will practice both so I can secure these to memory.  Its such a great knot.  One of my favorite but I get a little wonky with knots and have to do them a few times to refresh my memory.  This thread will be me learning to muscle memory a few.  I also like that this knot has a few ways to tie it.  Each with a different scenario in mind as you point out.

Thank you.

I already lost my second most used knot, the hangman's noose.
I've thought about my next entry, and have narrowed it down to two.

One of three I was thinking of for my second knot has already been used.  I figure by the end of week two it might be hard.

I have two closely-related knots I plan to document... I'm sure one of them in particular is bound to be taken by someone else first.

Acting as proxy to my 8 yo son Vitor:
(My boy likes SAKs, Knifes, Knots and Star Wars)

This knot is called Bowline.
The bowline is a simple knot used to form a fixed loop at the end of a rope. It has the virtues of being both easy to tie and untie; most notably, it is easy to untie after being subjected to a load.

He makes this one really fast. :-)

I was wondering if there would be a single winner to this giveaway, or whether it might be tied:think:

Also worth (k)noting is that the bowline isn't a safe knot and can slip (which can be dangerous and has lead to a few climber deaths) so it should always be ended up with a safety knot to secure it. :salute:

Just add a single fisherman knot like on the lanyard pfsantos posted before as a stopper knot.

I was taut to do the same (to borrow RP's pun.).

And there are other variants......  :pok:

A knot is safe if it is used for the right purpose.
Otherwise I could say a Half-Windsor is terribly unsafe for bungy jumping.

I tie it like this. I make a loop, then pass the loaded end through the loop to make a ... well .... loop :) Then the tail goes through that loop and I tighten the loaded end if the rope till the rope jumps over the knot and tightens it. Then I add the stopper knot and done

I've seen that version, tail outside the loop, no security knot, referred to as the 'Dutch Bowline.'

The thing is that bowline was and for many still is the right knot. They use it to tie themselves in (ok if you add a stopper knot), or as the main anchor point which one should never do anyways. And that's how accidents happen.
