I found the Ashley Book of Knots available for download, for free.
https://archive.org/details/TheAshleyBookOfKnots/mode/2up

On the right there's a list of download options. I clicked the PDF. It's only 28.5MB.
Nice! Thanks for sharing! :hatsoff:

Here is the spoiler knot I selected with Ron in mind:

Ashely calls it the "Espalier Knot". He says it gets used to draw a plant up to a support using a length of twine.

Must be very old. These days we use twist ties, loose or tight as required. Zip ties are used too but less common.

...When I tie my shoes I usually tie the bows another round to keep it from untying...

I hate to be a stickler*....but we still need to see that final knot....  :wait:

Yes....modern tools like tie wire and zip ties have replaced knowledge and skills...makes me sad.

(And part of the inspiration for this thread!  :D )

Think about how much more ecologically friendly a small bit of jute twine is as compared to a plastic tie.....  :dunno:

No doubt you´re right. But we face a different problem. Many of my coworkers have problems like very low IQ or arrested development. We could teach them to tie a knot but would have to teach them again the next day, and the next... Even the correct use of simple tools like hoe, rake, and saw may be problematic for some. I like working with them but they need constant supervision. Hence the need for something simple like twist ties.

What's a stickler?

Someone who is overly concerned with rules and regulations. A person who is fussy about the way things are done. Often seen as uptight and 'OCD' about things.

....but in a good way.....

Another try to please the stickler, I mean Mr. Nix

Start with left over right, then make 2 loops/bunny ears, take the left loop over the right and pull thight, then another over/under with the loops to secure the knot :tu:

I know, I know, crappy explanation but it's the best I could come up with

I might have to go back and see if this one was already submitted...

In any case, being as I've done a hitch and a bend so far, I thought I might go for a loop this time.

It's an easy one to tie (I'll put up step by step pics once I'm sure it wasn't used already) can be done one handed, and in the bight. It is also basically the same structure as the marlinspike hitch I was cheated off - but instead of hitching around a solid item, you pull it through itself to create a loop.

Also, since Nix loved the Dog on a Tucker box so much, here's a bonus picture of  the dog on a tuckerbox, and also a knot and a SAK on a tuckerbox.

That looks like an Artilleryman's Loop....unless I'm mistaken. The dog on the tucker box is quite distracting....

I don't think we've seen an Artilleryman's Loop yet......

I have it as a harness loop, but it would appear they are names for the same thing.

I wasn't sure when I tied it, as I didn't have the internet - I figured I'd be safe because so many knots have been climbing knots, and this one is not considered good for that.

Yes!  I've heard it called the "Man-harness loop".

Which sounds like someone is going to do some work......... *** runs off to the coffee shop before the work starts....***

Hello!!!
The 3rd Vitor's entry:
Truckers Hitch.

Very usefull to keep a rope tight, keep adjusting the tension to keep a cargo secure. It's also easy to untie.

First: make this small loop:

Second: Pass the rope through a anchor point and make a loop with the end.

Third: pass the loop inside the first loop to adjust the rope tension.

Fourth: Finish making a simples knot with the second loop to secure all.
