I have two resources that indicated the half-hitches should be tied like a clove hitch around the standing end:

and this one from Ashley:

I believe this is the correct way to tie the Round turn with two Half-hitches, the Cove hitch being a nice secure knot. Is your source different?

Some really great stopper knots. Thanks to RP for a well done "cheat sheet".  I'll be referencing this thread for sure.  I said I wanted to learn 5 knots but with so many greats ones I'm going to try to tie one everyday for a week then a new one the next week and so on.  I hope I can memorize at least 10 including those great stopper knots.

Well first of all thank you for accepting my knot .......  :salute:      :tu:
..... and especially if it is wrongly tied ....

Hmmm, yes the clove hitch is a secure knot, although I always thought of that as being when around a wider solid object - not a flexible rope of the same thickness

Well my source is probably my memory from the Scouts - so probably not so reliable - and I dread to think how long ago that was
I definitely remember being told about the wrong and right way to tie - Maybe my de-fuddled brain switched them over
But I have always tied it the way I showed for the last several decades !!!

I'll need to ask my climbing friends!

Vitor's 5th entry:

Pile hitch.
The pile hitch is a kind of hitch, which is a knot used for attaching rope to a pole or other structure. The pile hitch is very easy to tie and can be tied in the bight, without access to either end of the rope, making it a valuable tool.

A pile hitch may be easily and quickly tied either in the end or bight of a heavy line. It is remarkably secure and is easy to cast off when the left bight has been loosened by a single well-aimed kick. Recommended for medium and heavy lines.

So many great knots here. :o

Here's the knot I learnt for this GAW, called the Farrimond friction hitch:

I hope you can understand my demonstration pics.  :-\
It's a friction quick slip adjustable knot. It may have other names, and be a close variation of a knot that's already appeared here. If so, I'll make a more suitable entry.  :ahhh

Step 1: Pass the rope around the cylinder.
You then make a loop with the free end and lay it over the 'Standing end'.

Step 2: Pass the loop underneath the standing end.

Step 3: Pass the loop back over the standing end.

Step 4: Pass the loop underneath the standing end for the last time.
Final tally: under, over and under, adding up to 3.

Step 5, make a mini loop with the free end and thread it through the tangle you made.
From right to left, there are three ropes it has to pass through: over, under and over.

Step 6, tighten (mainly by pulling on the standing end) and tidy it up.

I've never seen this knot before today, but I'll do my best to remember it.  :tu:
In lots of cases where you might need an adjustable knot, there are better knots. But this one looks splendid for things such as tent guy lines, or the line that holds up your bivvy, stuff like that. And when you're packing up, one pull and it comes undone!

The image I used as my instructions:

Details about the knot:
http://www.troop226.org/farrimond-friction-hitch/
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farrimond_friction_hitch

Edit: it just occurred to me that it might be tidier and stronger if you start with the standing end under tension already.

Oh, excellent!

I had been thinking of using the Farrimond friction hitch as one of my spoiler knots.  Of all the friction hitches, it most resembles a Pruisk in my mind. And, like the Prusik, it offers tremendous gripping power.  :tu:  This is a really excellent friction hitch.

I have found it a bit fiddly to tie, and it requires dressing and tightening before using. Nevertheless, a great hitch! I'm really glad this knot showed up!  :tu:

Good morning - Well into November for me  :pok:

Aren't time zones weird.

I often have to speak to colleagues in Arizona and they are nearly a day behind me.
Sometimes it's handy
- Give them some work end of my day it comes back start of my next day, or we can meet to discuss my morning :D.
Sometimes not so handy - If I want to work with them my Monday - I can't - I have to wait for my Tuesday   >:(

Really loved this thread Nix and knot friends - Thanks all for great participation - BTW - (Dont worry you are my friends)
All my frequently used knots featured - And tons I do knot know - Some of which are definitely worth learning
Need to start studying
- And aren't knots great - So clever

I am still overdue a chat on the Italian Hitch - called the Munter hitch here - Although enki pretty much nailed it for me!!
On that topic: Another interesting fact we have found is that several of our knots have different names around the world

I know what you mean.  When I was in the Navy, I always wore a watch with 3 Time Zones - where I was, home and Zulu (What the military calls GMT and uses as reference time zone).  It could be difficult finding a good time to call home.

Knot number 5 is Also from the blue kerchief of fishing knots and they called it the nail knot. It is used to join lines of different weight or diameter. A nail or straw is used to guide the line through the loops to complete the knot.  I used the last of my bank line and some twine and I used a pencil instead of a nail.   I tied the two types of cordage together successfully, but it could slip and be pulled apart (first attempt) so, I added square knots on the ends for safety knots (second attempt).  Real fishing line wouldn't have slipped because of the friction.

I use the Nail knot to attach my leader to my fly line.

A fly line is somewhat compressible. Once the Nail knot has been cinched down tight, it holds amazingly well.

It is probably a very specialized knot, but one I wouldn't be without!  :tu:

I’m sad to see this GAW come to an end.

I really appreciate awl the active and interested participation. I don’t know about you guys, but Learned quite a bit. I also had a lot of fun. So, a big thank you to each and everyone who participated.

There can be only one winner….so let’s make the winner’s task just a little bit harder…..

Here is the selection of tools that the winner of the random drawing must choose from:

For those of you who have been following along, you will see there is one last knife added to the mix, a T.K. Steingrass field knife.

This is a handmade knife by a maker with great attention to detail (he was a former Navy submariner and nuclear sub machinist. They are known for their attention to detail.). Here is his website: http://steingassknives.com/home

The ergos on this knife are really remarkable. The finger grooves are unobtrusive, yet provide an excellent grip. The ‘coke bottle’ handle provides a nice palm swell. The balance and feel is wonderful. To my large hand, this handle is a little smaller, yet more comfortable than the Bravo handles (and I love the Bravo handles).

I can’t remember the steel used in this knife. He uses several different steels in his knives, but I think this might be 1095 (He also uses S3v, 154cm, etc). The burl wood handle is really lovely and sits on thin green liners.

Check out how he has tapered the tang: beautiful, and keeps the balance a bit more forward.

This is a really well made knife, and I can’t think of anything negative to say about it. The sheath is well made, albeit a bit banged about (I’ve carried this knife a bit and used it somewhat.). The saber grind keeps the edge geometry a little wide, but this was by intent. The result is a very sturdy knife, well suited for general tasks.

I’d hate to be the person who has to choose between these knives. Good luck!
