Angler/Fisherman with penguin scales
on: October 06, 2020, 10:59:33 PM
Ran across this on The Big Auction Site. I’ve been doing a bit of research on the Fisherman/Angler models in past few weeks but haven’t found a reference to these scales thus far, so I post in the hope for enlightenment. Anyone have info on this knife?

Thanks.

Don't know about the scales, but unless it's under the paper - Main blade has its tip broken off.

Yeah. Also, someone already bought it. I was just wondering what the heck it is; sakwiki and google have both failed me.

I didn’t try to get it because of the condition. But this might be a related knife. Maybe. Unless the penguin logo is some sort of available stock from the time. My knife dates to the ‘65-‘66 range and is a 235maU (like Ranger)

Ah, interesting; thanks. Have you run across any other inlays like this? By which I mean “ones not used on standard victorinox models but also seemingly not a specific corporate request” ? I mean, your knife has a corporate logo but the one I posted doesn’t.

It’s possible that the penguin is the corporate logo.....

None that I can specifically recall. But a couple of things make me think this is possible. One is that a blue scaled fish model that wasn’t (IIRC) listed in a known catalog. Possibly a custom request. The other is that during this time later ‘60s - it seems that many advertising inlays used similar fonts...as in they only had so many available ‘in stock’.  Custom logos had been done in the past, for sure. There are lots from the the ‘40s going forward...but not many that I know of that had engraved picture details like their own (Fish, Ford Model T, St. Christopher) This penguin is the only one of the few I know of from this time period. Maybe the company just had a lot of money for advertising.

It’s possible that the penguin is the corporate logo.....

Certainly possible. I think I tried searching when I got that knife but found nothing definitive.

2nd look...I think it’s a souvenir (my copy at least) for the city of Punta Arenas. Penguins are part of the tourist attraction there. So I guess not a corporate logo.

What auction site are you referring to? Would love to just flip through the pictures for fun... But I couldn't find it...
