Day 18

Well, the mudflaps got put on today. My grandparents had finally decided to take it to my Granddad's nephew; who runs a mid-sized towing and recovery operation and a garage.   The mechanic had to take the wheels off, and use an impact driver.  Took him a half-hour. $25 well spent.  That is, opposed to half a day and countless swear words. "Installs in minutes without removing wheels" my foot.  I bet my folks that if I made the guy who wrote the instructions install them with the tiny recommended selection of tools; he probably couldn't do it.

The Mercator has replaced the Queen USA #49 Big Chief as my go-to big but lightweight and slim knife. The Big Chief I would call a Mercator competitor because from when new (late 1940s-2008) they were both inexpensive no frills knives. Well, now a few years after Queen went out of business, cheap ones ain't easy to find these days.

You can't really find a locking Big Chief. That was the #49L with liner lock, and I've not seen very many offered for sale (I think only a small amount were made late '90s). Few really had lanyard attachments; the #49S Big Chief Serrated (hole), #49EO (hole on '60s '70s examples; bail on 1990s examples),  and the 1990s #49D Diver's Knife (semi-hawkbill blade).  They're now $40-50. I paid $25 for my #49EO 4-5 years ago, and I traded a well-used hawkbill for the one you see here, a plain jane 1950s-1960s #49.  A Mercator is around $30, carbon or stainless steel, various handles (brass and copper), and large and small sizes (there was the Barlow sized #49M, but they're hard to find).  All models have bails too, and the full-size one locks.

Time to replace my 40+ year old potato masher, it has served me very well but the handle doesn’t want to be fixed anymore so time for retirement.

Kabar FH did help to break down some card boxes, it's like a mini edge retention test in itself.  After a small box or two, the edge is still sharp enough to slice receipt paper, which is fairly decent.

Kabar FH attended lunch duty.  I was thinking whether I would use it to cut the burger to half, but still can't get over using coated knife on food...

The Becker BK40 looks like it fits the parameters of this challenge if you want to switch things up a little bit. :pok: :pok:

Day 20
I used the Schrade 60T to cut some paracord to make a lanyard for my Brisa EnZo necker 70.  The bead is an octopus if anyone's interested, but I'll probably remove it.  I'll have to carry it awhile to make up my mind.

Which are you referring to, you using the BK40 or me removing the bead from my lanyard?  There was no requirement to use the same knife through the whole challenge, and to be honest, I want to see the BK40. :D

Day 20.

I used it quite a bit today, but this was the only thing I got a pic of. I'd been meaning to buy a hook and pick set for years. They are invaluable for getting pocket lint out of knife internals; which can especially be bad on secondhand knives. Also good for other stuff. It was cheap when I went to Advance Auto Parts two days ago, and I decided to finally get a set.
