What tools necessary for you ?
on: October 11, 2020, 07:45:11 AM
Got the idea from Leatherman's FB page.
Here's my list:
Needle nose pliers
Serrated Blade
Pihilips or Bit
File
This thread isn't limited to plier based tools. SAKs are welcome as well

OK
........I guess you mean for a regular EDC?  ???
  • Blade
  • Scissors
  • Toothpick
Although I have been liking - and using - the Phillips on my Explorer - Which seems to be my regular EDC at the moment

At the weekend I usually have
  • Small pliers (Juice)
in my pocket   :tu:

In order of used most

When at work

Pliers
Screwdrivers
Knife

Not at work

knife
Pliers

My trouble is i never show initiative, but that's only because no one has told me to.

:iagree: welcome  and I guess my most used tools are (not in an specific order)

Pliers
Knife (PE preferably)
Screwdriver (bit driver mostly)
Scissors (SAK scissors are my favs)
File (diamond preferable but any file is nice to have)
Awl (I actually made one of these to fit the bit driver)

I'll divide this into my MT phase from the 2000's and my current SAK phase... With an intervening transitional phase wherein I was still using a MT, though in a different manner...

MT days of yore ...
Pliers
Serrated blade
Screwdrivers
Opener

Transitional phase with a MT ...
Plain edge blade
Pliers (mostly as super grippers)
Opener
Scissors
Screwdrivers

Current situation
Scissors
Blade
Opener
Screwdrivers

Then there's a smattering of other tools... Tweezers, wood saw, micro screwdriver.  The trouble is, some are put into use in predictable settings, and some aren't.  This leads to a core principle of EDC Theory.

Singularity - a multitool is inherently continuously tending toward Singularity.
    a. Every tool that one uses which has the potential to be on a multitool will exert a force of attraction toward a multitool.
    b. The multitool will also exert a force of attraction upon the implement itself.
    c.  The relative intensity of those forces is dependent on variables which are not consistent among MT-implement pairs, not are they consistent across the space-time continuum.
The characteristics of these forces on the space-time-necessity continuum are described separately, deserving of their own treatise.
    d.   A third force - the User - can create a Warp in the multidimensional plane on which the relative forces act.  This Warp will alter the vector of the forces.
    e.  The forces exerted by the MT-implement pairs can, in turn exert a  force upon a previously unaffected User outside the multidimensional plane of space-time-necessity which is perpendicular to that plane.  Similar to the well described force known as electromagnetism, this is dependent on the force that the two objects exert on one another.

The tendency toward Singularity is always present, but not constant.  Each MT-implement pair has an effect on the overall strength of the tendency toward Singularity.

So the question is.... When the utilization of an implement which has a low affinity to an MT (such as tweezers or a wood saw in the above illustration), how does the randomness vs predictability of said implement's.... Umm... Implementation into existence... Utilization, if you will... exert a force on the multidimensional plane of the space-time-necessity continuum?  Does it create another Warp in the multidimensional plane?  Does that Warp create enough of a change in the vector so as to deflect the implement on to another MT-Implement pair (E.g. an outdoor or work MT)?  Or does that implement remain in the same pair, but never exerts enough force to cause complete Singularity (E.g. Uncle Bill's tweezers)?  And perhaps most importantly, do these Singularities occur on one space-time-necessity continuum, or are there multiple, parallel dimensions?

It depends on the job. I can, quite often, just tote a small, one-bladed folder around the house and do everything I need to do. Typically, a Leatherman Rebar does what I need to do for most stuff, at the least weight. But, for more specific stuff.

But scissors and the ability to tackle #2 Phillips is key around the house. That is most of my SAKs.

Farm chores and just messing about outdoors adds the need for an awl, serrated blade and saw. Usually that means the Huntsman, Fireman, or Trekker/Soldier M2008/GAK.

Fencing needs strong pliers. Usually that means my SwissTool, since the aggressive file SAKs have can also cut through most fencing wire when I've accidentally misplaced my fencing plier.

Mechanical work means bit driver and aggressive file. That means Gerber Center-Drive, which is my main choice for small engine and automotive work.

Farm work in general often means I carry an OHO folder and/or fixed blade (usually folder SE/PS and fixed blade PE), multitool (Leatherman Rebar or ST300.

Kitchen means openers. Most of my SAKs already have that.

Scissors..
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

It depends on the setting, but generally the essentials are:

Knife, flat screwdriver, PH2 screwdriver.

In terms of use file and scissor (working one) comes next.

Less used but still much appreciated when needed are gripping pliers, awl, tweezers, magnifying glass and small drivers.

I generally avoid using or relying on any cutting pliers.

So far nobody has written that they need a cork screw or package carrying hook.   :D

- Blade (any kind)
- Flat driver/pry bar
- Scissors

The Pioneer X has meet these requirements for me since it was introduced in 2016.
AND it has a can opener/phillips and an in line reamer.

 If I were to have to choose tools for a do-everything MT, I would want a corkscrew on it... I think.
