Day 30

(Image removed from quote.)
Lovely pix to wrap the challenge!

111mm Day 30:

Like our snow, the challenge is melting away into the river of time....

(Image removed from quote.)

This Hercules proved to be an excellent carry for the past 30-days.

It is a tad big, both in the hand and in the pocket, but still adequately suited to pocket carry. In a caddy or from a dangler (which kept the 111mm more upright) carry was a breeze. I should say the for the month of January I wasn't required to wear anything dressy or formal.....the Hercules might be a bit more problematic in that situation.

As I've said before, the toolset seems excellent for my uses and activities. I didn't take it camping, kayaking, or fishing this month, but I think it would make a great companion for those activities. I can also see it being a great tool for a road trip.....although the Spirit might have some advantages.

Aside from the blade and best-ever-MT saw, the other tools can be found in the 91mm line. The pliers in the Swiss Champ are the same as those in the Hercules or Skipper. The scissors are the same size as those in the Climber.....

Which begs the question, why a 111mm vs a 91mm?

For me, the answer is that the ergonomics of the 111mm's handle outweighs the marginally more convenient size of the 91mm's. I have big hands and the 111mm handle is just more comfortable and secure to grip. I've never really had an issue using a Classic or Executive or Farmer....so, true, they awl work well...it's just that the 111mm's feel better in hand to me.

I was seriously impressed by the Hercules' toolset: big blade, awesome saw, light pliers, great Vic scissors, opener layer, 2 different 3d Phillips drivers, awl, corkscrew (w/glasses driver), T&T, and, in my case, a sail needle stashed under one of the Phillips drivers. That is a bunch of preparedness and capability.

My most used tools were the blade, scissors, can opener, bottle opener, and corkscrew. Looking at that list....well....the Outrider might have been a better choice for the month. However, I liked having the pliers with me. Moreover, the Outrider is only marginally more comfortable to carry. So, no regrets.

Awl in awl....the Hercules was a pleasant surprise to carry for a month. For me, this was a challenge well spent!   :tu:

Many thanks to the numerous SAK knights, SAK addicts, and SAK fans who made this challenge so much fun and constantly interesting. You guys--the best SAK fans in the World--rocked this challenge start to finish!

   Congratulations to awl who completed it (and who will soon complete it)!

Great wrap!

Day 30
Using the prybar to break out some dodgy wood in the bathroom windowsill.
It's been fun carrying a bigger knife then normal , but I'm looking forward to going back to my normal 91/93mm carry. Much like the minimal challenge let me know 84mm blades were not quite enough , this has let me know that for pretty much everything besides food prep (at which it shines ) the 111mm blade is more than what I needed .
Thanks to all who rode this bus with me and the organisers for giving us the opportunity .
Knife on , brethren  :climber:

Day 30 !!

Fitting end to the month.  Forgot my mask as I got to the store.  Luckily I had a box of disposables in the back seat.  So, a photo fitting for 2020/21 and where we all are.

and a send off photo of the knives used this month.

Nice pix to the finish!  Which one is your favorite? :pok:

I really like the mighty Work Champ but I love this toolset.  I can definitely see this knife seeing more pocket time.  Is there a day of the week set aside for 111's?  111 Wednesday perhaps?  :D
We have a new convert!  :D

Day 31 bonus pics - wouldn’t have felt right to have chosen another SAK this month and horror of horrors, may not get one in the poker face challenge :ahhh

This time the rucksack which I never really got around to carrying

Congratulations everyone, been a top challenge :like:

Tough choice.  Either the Rucksack or the Trekker seemed to be used the most.  They are on the smaller end, and felt better in my pockets.

Thanks for asking! :)

You definitely should get one, it's great compliment to any SAK collection!

:iagree: Trouble is comis the only copy I can find is US$500  :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh

Cool pic!

I wonder where the other highways are. I heard 91 and 93 are very popular.

Day 31

Final day! Mrs. Templar went on another sole cleaning mission. This time I suggested the Skipper's marlin spike instead of the Hercules' awl. As expected, the blunt, wedge-shaped tip of the marlin spike made it a very effective tool for the job (even better than the awl). Unfortunately though, the pebbles left some scratches on the polished marlin spike  But then again, it's a tool, not a museum piece, so I better get over it.

As a bonus, I throw in a picture of all my 111 mms (sans the Garant and the Workchamp, which remain in their boxes until their first use (if applicable)). Ironically, even though at first I did not mean to partake in this challenge, the possibility that I might join after all was excuse enough for me (you know how it is ) to get the Skipper and the Outrider.

Except for today's Skipper exercise, I ended up never using those new acquisitions during the challenge - the Hercules was just too good and comfy enough to carry. But when life goes back to normal and hiking/sailing become an option again, I am sure the Outrider and Skipper will get a chance to shine.

Thanks again to Nix for hosting the challenge, to Vicman for giving all participants his unwaivering support and last but not least to Comis for spoiling us with one of his famous magnets! I have already reserved some prime real estate on our family fridge!
