A Rules Clarification:

This challenge is designed to be fun. The tool sets will change up to four times. And there is (with a good hand) the possibility of a wide latitude of carry options. The primary requirement is to post at least one photo of one of your permitted tools during the course of the day. There is no requirement to carry all tools at all times of day and night. If you can't legally carry a tool, Do NOT! Just post a photo of that tool (and tell us that you couldn't carry it for legal or pragmatic reasons).

The challenge isn't designed to see if you can survive for 30 days with just a SAK Rambler, a box of Jaffa cakes, and a Speedo. (That just one of Fuzzy's quirky hobbies.) We're using the game of Poker to have some fun, share some tools, have a laugh or two, and hopefully get through a cold dark month in northern latitudes.

To keep this challenge as open and accessible as possible, for purposes of the challenge a "Fixed blade" is any knife that does not fold, close, or retract. This can include outdoors knives, hobby knives, or kitchen knives. (comis and I love kitchen knives!) If it is a fixed blade knife that you own and use, it will count! You don't have to carry your craft knife or paring knife all day, you just have to post up a photo of it.....until you can get a better hand by drawing more cards or in the second round.

In this challenge, the suit of Spades indicates a "Fixed blade" knife. So, if your current hand is dominated by Spades, you could end up with a Fixed blade for that portion of the challenge. But this could be an Xacto knife you use for stamp collecting or a cleaver you use for chopping BBQ.

If you felt you couldn't join in this Winter-time challenge because you don't own a Bowie knife, don't sweat it: that kitchen knife you use to open the morning box of cereal counts.  :tu:

Remember, while there are Milk Duds and Gummy bears on the line here, it is just for fun. Be safe & be legal!   :tu:

What if you get a straight with four spades in it?

What if you get a straight with four spades in it?

That means you have four fixed blades to chose from, plus an extra tool to match the other suit.  :ahhh

Could be an Xacto, two kitchen knives, and a hunting knife. Plus a SAK/Folder/Pliers tool, depending on the suit of the last card.

Carry and use what you want from that collection of five (5) tools!   :tu:

Those of us with just one tool will be jealous. Hopefully you won't laugh at us too much......

I'll let comis rule on the axe question.  I kinda like the idea of allowing axes in the fixed blade (Spades) category........ But he is the ultimate decision maker here.  :)

The dealers make the rules, and I just happen to be one of them.  :hatsoff:

I too agree allowing axe as fixed blade, but please don't tell people I say that. :D

This looks like great fun.

But if I play and my hand gives me black cards - I will not be happy!!
And, like Surge, will even have problems supplying these tools for the challenge.

I suppose if I win the Knot Challenge that might sort out one of my problems!!   :pok:    Hint, Hint

Shouldn't spade also include... spades?

Yes. A spade clearly has its blade fixed to its handle. So, you know...

Ah...well....no.

Buldozers have blades affixed to them, but they aren't include in the suit of Spades.

No trowels, picks, shovels, bulb planters, hoes, secateurs, or weeding tools. Unless you use your knife as a weeding tool....which I have done.....

Would that mean if your hand didn't allow fixies you wouldn't be allowed to use a trowel in work? Pics of a Vic Cadet filling in would be a sight to see

Clubs don't include clubs.
Spades don't include spades.
Hearts don't include hearts (the participant's or any others).
Diamonds......diamonds can be included in Diamonds, but they have to be shipped to a referee for in-person testing and valuation. Only genuine diamonds of sufficient value will be accepted.

Return shipping is not guaranteed.

I have sharpened several brick trowels in use to cut as good as some knives.

comis may overrule my decision here, but I think that a mason's trowel....e.g.:

....that has been sharpened to function like a knife may be permitted, with the caveat that it be used (and action shot photo posted) in a knife-like capacity outside of its standard mason function. For example, to chop vegetables for a meal or split firewood and carve a feather stick. And it better be able to cleanly slice paper. Remember....once you identify your 'fixie', the 'fixie' becomes your tool for that period of the challenge until your poker hand changes..... If'n you choose a prison-shank-style trowel, as one of your tools for a portion of the challenge...you are stuck with it until you get new cards.  ;)

Having a super amount of fun on my first challenge (Minimal SAK)...

Also, just ordered my first fixed blade... so I think I have at least one of every tool category now. I have to EDC some sort of blade for work. So if I didn't have a fixed blade, I felt like I would be cheating if that's the hand that I was dealt and then had to carry my folder anyway. Now I can play with a clear conscience.

I'd like to think that besides "fun", this challenge can push me to leave my traditional carry behind and try to see if I can get by (or even learn to love) carrying a different category of tool. The Minimal SAK challenge has really made me realize that my Tinker is more usable than my traditional folder... albeit significantly less fun to "fidget" with.

I also love poker...

I'm game.

This challenge should be fun.....and....it may throw some unexpected tool options our way. So that should be entertaining, too.
