Coloring synthetic materials Take II
on: October 25, 2020, 12:01:15 PM
A while back I tried to color synthetic materials (mostly Victorinox scales), rather unsuccessful. After watching the video BladeHQ did (see below) I decided to give it a 2nd shot. Though this time I was more interested in coloring G10, but I did also throw in Vic parts just to see...

Like the BladeHQ tutorial videos

91mm scales, despite holding them in for only 10-15 seconds they took color nicely. However, they deformed too much to be mounted flush. I will try to press them flat, see if I can fix that but I'm not hopeful

Different story were the EVO scales... those turned out NICE. Also the rest of the hardware turned out real good. So, if you have white EVO scales lying around, go ahead they take color nicely :D

One of my oldest folders (I actually have several of them, some unused) is the Tactical roper. Sadly, it is all black, I do have a yellow one, but this one has a serrated blade. Since I don't like the yellow I decided to give it a go. After turning greenish it became this really nice dark dark turquoise. Love it.
Next step for this knife is stripping the color of the blade, then try a stone-wash...

Then I had those 2 grey folders (sadly no before shot, but google can help you out there). The BM Valet was a shade dark than the James Brand Carter. Both turned out great.

I hate the holes on the skeletool blades, so I did fill them in with glue and colored them. Yeah, I was bored... not sure if I will leave it in.

I wonder if that will work for the Cruel Girl Jeans version? It seems to be marked down quite a bit, but IT"S PINK!

Same folder, just with quite some lettering on the blade (and I think it is serrated too).
Yeah, should work, probably ending up with purple/violet-ish... unless you take black. I think that always works.

Nicely done :tu:
Off topic, how is the James Brand Carter? Haven't really seen anyone having a James Brand knife before.

Well, I bought it, because I love the axis lock and I wanted to test out the competition (sidenote, I absolutely dislike the SOG Terminus XR CF, I also bought the Houghe/Ritter mini-griptillian), so I got the Carter. I would say for VG-10 you are overpaying. The Carters construction is complicated with an incredible amount of parts (see image), resulting in a quite clean look. Taking it apart is actually really easy (apart for the large number of parts).
I like the knife, good blade shape, rides nicely in the pocket

Pro:
- Clean look
- Really deep pocket clip that is not a hotspot
- overall good ergonomics
- good bladeshape with a really nice grind
- you can really take everything apart easily with T6/8 (I'm getting an expert on this, as I have taken almost all of my knifes apart).
- Feels soft, sounds soft (flicking open/close), probably the result of the G10 construction with the spacer at the back dampening everthing)

Con:
- clip is really ugly
- price for the steel
- The elongated lockbar-tabs have more friction (on the plus side you can actually adjust them)
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Swapped the thumb-stud for a red one... man this is excellent, turned out so well with the black/blue-grey scales. the wine-red liner and the bright red hardware.
