Poetry?
on: May 28, 2012, 05:59:27 PM
I never thought I would see a poem in a book about knives.  But at the end of The Swiss Army Knife Owner's Manual is this:  (the author has agreed to let it appear here)

The Swiss Knife

A butterfly may bore an ox, whose fortes are strength and duty;
A guy and gal a perfect fit hold love ‘gainst drum and fife;
But Wenger and Victorinox give function form, with beauty,
And when it’s time to pack my kit there’s a Swiss Army Knife.

Some have a sharp machete for clearing branchy glade;
Some hang a panga from their belt for general-purpose work;
A Gurkha has his kukhri, the Marine his fighting blade;
But the Swiss Knife is more useful than a scimitar or dirk.

A hammer’s good for nails of course; a shovel: dirt and snow and hail;
A chair and broom enough for some to bring in naughty lions;
A cowboy’s hat can water horse; a lady’s purse is more than style;
A book may hold a bookshelf up; a blanket: wear or lie on.
But sleeps in pocket: shoes, lunch, haircut, a mirror true on life -
There is one tool that does it all: it’s a Swiss Army Knife.

Would love to hear Richard Dean Anderson read it.   :D

A bloody contribution...

Coleridge's Knife

What if you slept?
And what if in your sleep, you dreamed?
And what if, in your dream, you went to hell and there you found a knife and killed someone?
And what if, when you awoke, you had the bloody knife in your hand?
Ah, what then?

Ricardo Borges

Based on a quote by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Nice necro! That reminded me of a poem I love:

He looked beneath his shirt today
There was a wound in his flesh so deep and wide
From the wound a lovely flower grew
From somewhere deep inside
He turned around to face his mother
To show her the wound in his breast that burned like a brand
But the sword that cut him open
Was the sword in his mother's hand

(awlso another one I know by heart: Em minha perdição se conjugaram / Os erros e a fortuna sobejaram / Que para mim bastava amor somente)

You said Richard Dean Anderson,,, but my mind heard Harry Dean Stanton. Reckon they both could do a fine job of reading it.

Dear, Sir Santos,

A nice poem, indeed! Who is the author?

My Master's Degree was in Studies of Literature, my dissertation was O fetichismo na lírica e na épica de Luís Vaz de Camões.

As armas e os barões assinalados somos nós e nossos Victorinox, pelo menos aqui!!!

The good old Victorinox Outrider was present in the 6 years of study and worked quite well in classes, lectures, colloquia etc. I was always the one with a SAK (a Espada fera!!!)...

Greeting from Brazil!!!

Time for sharpening!
How do I do this again?
Oops. I need first aid.

A bloody haiku, Sir Jothra! Beautiful.

A fresh one here.

Long night at Ebay.
Hundreds of SAKs passing by...
I just bought a sheath!

I bought too many
cheap and charming lovely knives
No time to sell them
This life is merely a staging ground for eternity. Are you preparing for the rest of forever?

And the question I'd asked thrice....
But alas, no dice.

Here I was thinking the forum was soliciting our own little efforts. To be honest I should be glad that it is not.  :rofl:
