Dave K's gift

Dudes and dudesses,

I know some of this should be on the feedback forum but I wanted it to get maximum exposure. :P

A big thanks to Dave K who VERY kindly sent me some of his modded scales for me to apply to a Swiss champ.

He is a craftsman and the quality of his work is excellent.

He was very apologetic about one of the scales having a small wormhole (middle picture), but for me this just adds character.  It means that it will never be reproduced and is a complete unique one off. :ahhh

To put it simply...I love  it and Thanks Dave very much (Fish and chips on me at the meet up )

Here are the piccies, but please bear in  mind that the small bit of metal showing on the bottom photo was due to me fitting it slightly wonky and is in no way due to Daves work.

(Dave thanks again  :salute:)

Cool scales there Dave :tu:

One quick question, are those scales glued onto the SAK because I thought with Vic scales once you clip them off they don't clip back on again

Cheers  :salute:

I'm not actually sure how Flash glued them on, but I suggested he used an epoxy resin, which is what I've used myself previously. It's true that with the Vic scales, when you pop them off, you can lose a bit of the celidor / nylon or whatever, which means they won't fit so snugly again. I often get a little ring of plastic that comes free after removing them.

With the scales in the picture, it would be very difficult to engineer a "snap fit" like the original Vic scales, as simply, hardwood doesn't have the same elastic properties as plastic, and I don't have the ability yet to make them that accurately! I therefore tend make the recesses in the scales quite a bit larger than the bushings that they fit over, to avoid wear to the wood during use. Epoxy resin (specifically araldite) seems to work really well for that, and does actually allow you to remove them at a later date if you need to. The down side to that process is that they can slip a bit whilst the glue hardens if you're not really, really careful, as in Flash's 3rd pic!

I used to come here a lot.

Thanks for the info, thought I could remember something about them not clipping on correctly after taking them off. If in doubt glue it on :D

Dave is right...I used Araldite and then placed them in a cloth covered clamp overnight.  Scrape away the excess glue and your good to go  :climber:
