Wiki Tang Stamp Page Project
on: November 15, 2020, 07:44:05 PM
The Wiki deserves a good guide on Tang Stamps as a reference to this important SAK element, so after languishing for 10 years, the Tang Stamp page is getting an update.

https://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Victorinox+Tang+Stamp+Guide

The effort starts with the 91mm size. Dates are often contentious, so as a shared resource, broad agreement will be needed to set time frames. I will care-take this page in parallel to this thread, but only to get the ball rolling. I will retake the images I have added to be dark text stamping on a light background, to try and set a reference for additional images.

Please remember that the Wiki is a guide for everyone, and is often used by people first embarking on their discovery of Swiss Army Knives. So we should keep this in mind as we build out the content of this page.

I applaud your efforts (and other people's) on this matter. I know too little about tang stamps to be useful :) But I will check my older SAKs to see if there's anything interesting going on there.
You should seriously visit vicfan.com. All the hoopy froods are doing it.

Thanks for taking the lead on this Max.  :tu:  that page has been in dire need of updating.

Lots of people don’t watch or monitor the wiki thread, and this too important a topic to get limited input.

This is one example that leads me to believe ‘73 for the main line blank rear stamp.

It exists on knives with the clip point. That’s the most obvious point, but other machining and construction details easily confirm.

Great images kamakiri, I have added these two that were missing and will retake mine to match your style.  :tu:

Well done!

 :hatsoff:

I don't think I have any older stamped knives. I'll take a look, anyway. If I find any not awlready listed, I'll post a pic you can use.

Looks like the ‘combined’ pic is easier to use?

Here are two more for Elinox

‘Large’ Elinox CB ‘57?-‘65

‘Small’ Elinox CB ‘65-‘73

‘65 is my opinion for the switchover. Could be later. One of the ad knives bearing 1965 still has the ‘Large’ stamp. In one of ulli’s threads (Here) and also as posted by elsinox.

Great pics kamakiri, I’ll load these into the gallery and update the Wiki. Good to get some more Elinox references.  :tu:

I don’t think ‘68 start is right for the VSSR/VOSCB combination, unless you’re going to break-down to the different variants in detail. But there’s a lot to get to and fill in for the ‘60s and ‘50s either way.

How early do you think this page should go?

Actually I do - I just popped a couple of piccies in the gallery - Not for the page per say - but OK for a gallery browse
I cant remember who the author was of the later piccie - pretty sure it was an MTo-er - so please let me know if you know - then we can credit

Also jnoxd has some good piccies in post 413 page 5 of Ulli's thread - Let me know if you want me to ask him if we can put them in the gallery

I've updated with the 2 new date ranges and images - thanks kamakiri  :salute:

Also retook the 5 mainline images I had, looking a lot better now, and more consistent.

@Huntsman; It's good to have references in the gallery - so by all means see if jnoxd is OK for his pics to be used.

How far back do we go??? I don't know how splintered the date ranges are in the 50s/60s, and how long we want to let this page to get. We're only adding a few rows for each range, so it's quite efficient (and works well on mobile), but it could become a problem if the length becomes excessive? Do we split off maybe pre-1950 to a 'vintage' tang page?

Glad to help Max. No need to thank me...you’re doing all the heavy lifting!

I think that all makes sense. jnoxyd’s post on dates are all fine with me as well as his representation in pics as long as he approves. Otherwise, you can expand the chart with those date brackets and we can start filling it with other pics as available.

I can also (mostly) fill one more category for 91mm for Hoffritz. Maybe after the Elinox grouping?

‘51-‘53? +AS/HSS
‘52? -‘57 HSS/VO
‘57-‘73 HSS/VOS
‘73-‘76 H/VSSR
‘76-‘82 H/SSR

Thanks kamakiri, this would be a good addition to the page.  :tu:

Yes, we can add after the Elinox grouping, but we may want to give a short intro to Hoffritz? Do you have samples for these 5 date ranges?

Got ‘em all. Could be more, but that’s what I got. There’s a Hoffritz page in the wiki that could be linked back to. Light is already fading today and I’ll start on the pics tomorrow.
