The rarest nail clipper?
on: November 18, 2020, 11:53:59 AM
I reported this new SAK earlier this year https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,21658.msg2099200.html#msg2099200

I recently discovered that the branding on this little nail clipper was specifically done to give Victorinox trade mark protection. In North America, SwissGear brands (incl. Wenger luggage) are held by Group III International, a brand house that specializes in product licensing, manufacturing and distribution in the travel and work gear.

So by releasing a branded product with the Swiss cross and Swiss Gear text, Victorinox will be able to protect themselves outside N. America against anyone attempting to use this logo in the pocket knife market.

They probably picked the Nail Clipper 580 as it was an affordable way of releasing a special run of scales, and it would be easy to get a few into circulation.

So how rare are they? I actually don’t know, but they’re no longer available, just a few months after being released. So I’m happy I stumbled across one of these little guys that now appear to have an interesting backstory to go with their attractive scales.

Strange but true...

Interesting read! This reminds me of that Delémont SAK with the Wenger name on the scales. I believe that was produced for the same reason, to protect the right to use the Wenger brand name.

What’s interesting is that you need to have product sales. You have less of a case with a registered design or trademark if there’s no product you can point to. Intellectual property, trademarks, registered designs, patents...a fascinating but complex subject.  :tu:

...and of course, intellectual property works both ways. Apparently, Victorinox got into a little bit of hot water when they released the 2016 Climber Gold, with a direct reference to the Brazil Olympic Games in the promotional material.
