My traditional December - journey to simple designs
on: December 01, 2020, 10:19:53 AM
Hi folks,

ive been carrying traditionals more and more recently, so I decided to try them for a whole month to see if they work for me. Been going minimalistic a lot the last months (mostly Pioneer or BSA type), but those trad knives have hit a spot.

No specific plan, I got a handfull of Case knifes already which will be my main knifes. No rotation planed, I will grab a knife for the day and will see if and how it works and if I will carry it for more days.
This topic will be a log more or less on how I am going in this "case"  (pun intended).

Day 1

Case Trapper SS in what I guess is called Bonestag.
Been carrying this now and then. Nice knife, a tad too large for office duty.
Plus I yet have to find some use for the second, large blade. A pattern like Case does on the small trapper with wharncliff blade would be awesome.
Great knife for food prep,

I’ve carried a Case 63032 Stockman daily for years. Carries well in the pocket and the sheepsfoot blade is a must. I’ve gone the other way. I have been carrying a sak now for about a month, rotating between a Pioneer X and an Alox MiniChamp. Try the 63032, you may like it.  *edit* After posting this picture it makes me want to carry it again.

I got a Case medium Stockman that will pop up at some time.

Had a Boker large Stockman in CV for some time as a garden knife, but that specific knife is a love-hate thingy, it ticks my my inner monkey, since the main blade snaps on the springs when i dont close it really carefull.

Thing about these 3 blade knifes is that I rarely have use for the third blade so far. A mainblade and one smaller one is enough most of the time. Plus the wharncliffe blade sticks out a lot on those stockmans.

We will see.

Might take that  Stockman out to office tomorrow.  :ahhh

The Stockman is a pattern that can grow on you, it did for me.

Day 2

As requested todays carry is a Case Medium Stockman SS in smooth natural bone with spearpoint blade instead of sprey blade.
I have carried SAKs a lot since the major knife law change in germany which made OHO blades almost illegal to carry.
Been a knife nut for a loooong time know, have 100+ folders and almost 100 MTs plus too many fixed blades than I can reasonably carry.
Heck, my addiction towards cold steel even brought me tot he point where I am sitting right now: engineer in a steel plant.
Ive studied steelmaking…  :twak:

Long story…

My EDC preferences and requirements are not as steamlined as some of you. Sitting at my desk, all I need is a small/medium blade for food prep and opening packages and office supplies. Thats where the Case knifes kick in.

In my heavy workwear (heat and flame resistant and some) I have a Gerber MP600 and a Benchmade 913, I dont want my nice knifes to come in contact with all the nasty stuff down on the shopfloor, or cut food with the knifes I had in hand down there.

Out of job, I am a very outdoorsy dude, and I got a family to care for, so usually a large locking SAK is needed. More food prep, more booboos to care for, and so on.

Hard to boil all down to just one knife, not at that point yet.

I usually choose challenges here where I really have to limit myself.
After all those knifes I got at home, the real question and the real holy grail oft he search is to find your spot between „I want“ and „I need“.
All the advertisement is towards „I want“, but if you boil it down, 95% oft he people would be fine with just a spartan.
Sure, I want to carry a fixed from time to time, I want to carry a MT from time to time . (McGyver kicks in…). But the sad reality is: A office job and the usual day to day routine does not require that.

Meh.

That's a lovely knife Shuya. A medium stockman was my first ever Case.  I will admit that I very gently took a file to the "kick" to make the sheepsfoot blade sit a touch lower.

I worked as a hospital/large building maintenance engineer and my thinking is very similar to yours on what to carry and when to carry it.

I completely miss-read "booboos".

Many years into collecting, and there's no further truth than that--it's always about 'want' vs 'need'.

Nice Stockman, I think often time we have such fixation on carbon steel that many modern stainless traditional pocket knives may have been overlooked.

Day 3.

Had to take down some cardboard boxes yesterday, the slim handle of the medium traper somehow didnt fit my hand that good. (glove size 10.5-11)

So I decided to take something thicker today.

Case Barlow Turquoise Curly Maple SS.

Shorter blades (in fact really short compated to handle), on the edge for proper food prep, but much more sturdy, feels really good in hand.

Lets see how this bugger performs.

Day 4

On fridays I only work untill lunch, so half day off. One afternoon per week is daddy time, I take my stuff and do whatever I want. In wintertime with limited daylight friday is the perfect day to go into the woods. In Summertime Ive been fishing a lot on my day off.

Out in the woods Ive planned to gather some fatwood, but all stumps Ive found so far are rotten. Doesnt matter, woods time is good time so why bother.

Took my Trapper with me again, in backpack there is small hatchet and a folding saw, too.

Day 5.

Crappy, litteraly smurfty day, sorry for those words.
Cant talk about it yet.

Mr. Trapper was with me and gets his final treatment on the strop.
Buisy day for him, making sticks for saussages at the fire.
The second blade makes a good scraper to save the mainblade.

Day 6.

Smurf day part two. Trying to think and get things back on track again.
Will be indoor day most likely so switched for something a little smaller.

Case Small Texas Jack Amber Bone CV.
A medium trapper frame minus the wharncliffe blade. Make this a tad larger and replace the spearpoint with a wharncliffe...I would buy a bunch and never look back.
