Lightening the Victorinox Spirit
on: January 15, 2009, 02:14:07 AM
Do you see any possibilities in removing some of the tools from the Spirit?

So for the light setup of the Spirit we would be left with:

    * Pliers (doh! :P)
    * Metal File/Saw
    * Philips
    * Wide Pryier/Large Screwdriver

P.S.
Just found your forum, love it.

 :think:

Removing those tools would certainly lighten the Spirit up, but would it even be noticable?

Welcome to the forum. Truth is I like my Spirit the way it is, but would like to see a lighter or smaller version. Chances of that are very slim since Vic sees em as competition for their SAK line.

It's a great tool however I carry a large SAK on me at all times so I thought of removing the extra tools.

What do you guys think of the complexity of performing such a mod?

Do you see any possible complications?

I think it's impossible because the lack of additional layers would introduce a lot of blade play to the tools that are left?

If you do it right it won't, I'm for modding (would like to try it myself some day), but why not just get a slimmer sak? there are many models to chose from.

Oh I'm sorry I wasn't precise.

I carry a
58mm classic SAK w/ pen)
+
slim 3 layer SAK (111mm Hunter)
saw, serrated gutting blade, long plain edge, combotool opener, corkscrew, awl

For some heavy duty work, especially with metal, Spirit is perfect however  I don't need the doubling options and would love to lighten it.

Also I don't want to leave the 111m Hunter because the blade, wood saw, awl, corkscrew, and gutting serrated blade are superior to Spirit's.

I think the weight could go down to 135g?

Welcome to the forum mate :tu:

I really don't think that taking tool's out will lighten it very much to be honest, as most of the weight is in the pliers themselves :-\
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

Sounds like you want a Leatherman Pulse.

(someone else can check multitool.org to see if the pulse is any lighter than the spirit)

Pulse you say?
I don't feel it can keep up in quality and performance against the Spirit though.

I wouldn't think you'd have any "quality or performance" issues with the Pulse.
I used to come here a lot.
