After losing my step brother a few days before Christmas, I was excited for a new year.

Jan 1st at about 8am I was in the woodshop at work and was adjusting the tracking on a belt sander when my thumb got pulled into the rear of the machine and pinned against the plastic housing

I immediately went to the ER who did a terrible job at getting me out the door, and went to a hand surgeon on Tuesday. She took me straight into surgery yesterday (Wednesday)

As of now I still have a usable thumb and knuckle, but no more fingernail and a graft of skin in it's place.

Something I've done hundreds of times and yet it still went wrong very quickly. I don't feel too comfortable/complacent around power tools to begin with, i have always done my best to respect them but all it takes is a millisecond before things can go awry.

Here is a video of the process, but our sander has a much smaller knob and it's closer to the belt

Be safe out there!!

I have a checkup next Monday to see it for the first time since surgery, I have previous photos of everything but they are pretty gruesome, I haven't looked at them in detail yet either, been avoiding seeing it.

Has to be running to adjust the tracking!

The instructions for the sander tell you to hit the power, watch the belt, wait for it to slow, then adjust

Which makes no sense, every time the trigger is pulled the belt moves on initial startup and has to be adjusted!

Almost been there too - a disc sander once dragged what I was sanding into the gap by the fence and the part flipping pulled my fingers to the disc. I knew the risk, but it is just so easy to loose focus for second. (Or more generally not consider all possible things that can go wrong).

Hopefully you'll recover quickly.

Sorry to hear such bad news. That's a rough start for 2021, indeed...

Hope you get your thumb fixed soon! Next time, get some heavy protection gloves.

Next time, get some heavy protection gloves.

Just a little safety note on gloves and machinery: The general rule is to not wear gloves near machinery with exposed rotating spindles or moving parts. A glove can get caught up easier than your hand, and then go on to drag your hand and the rest of you into all kinds of potentially very bad issues. (Same goes for some jewelry, long hair, drawstrings, very loose clothing and so on)

Do we need to send you off to the naughty step again?

Sorry to hear about losing your step brother.

Despite the injury and surgery, it sounds like it could have been worse and no long-term functional damage.  I hope you heal fast and good.

The safety is one thing that I have to thanks the Navy for.  They were very conscience of safety practice and ensuring adherence.  I think it may have been that many things were inherently dangerous, so any way of mitigating the risks while still getting the job done was welcome.  Also, the videos and pictures of what “could happen” made sure Sailors understood.  My personal experience with my brother when young also didn’t hurt in taking machinery safety seriously.

The naughty stairs need fences? A wall? A moat? With crocodiles maybe? It is kind of expected for those/ us on the naughty stairs to not stay put..

The best safety video ever: Stabelfahrer Klaus

Somehow they didn't show this when I took my forklift drivers license back in the day. It would sure have done a better job than textbooks.

Slowly better, I was out of work for a month but have returned to light duty.

Unfortunately, the state doesn't cover your full loss of pay, only 66% based on the rate of pay from the previous year

In other words, you make nearly double on unemployment. Which is extremely aggregating.

But here's a thumb pic lol

I'm just about ready for real physical therapy, I have an appointment tomorrow on my birthday of course! Last bit of scab on the very front edge, but that's where I still have nerves so it is quite painful

Glad it is healing and you will son be able to start physical therapy.  If it is anything like mine was, you will come to hate rubber bands and putty, but it will help.
