Lots of tools with limited pocket space.
on: January 17, 2021, 04:27:40 PM
Let me start by saying its not a bad problem to have  :D.  As I begin 2021 with a new to me Trad graciously gifted to me by the lovely Steve I am rethinking what I carry, again  :tu:.

I've got some good tools that I want to carry yet I don't want to stuff my pockets or wear multiple sheaths.  I also don't want a bag loaded with tools so what to do?

After getting any new tool I usually carry it the next day.  I was already carrying traditional so the gift from Steve kinda had me pause for a moment.  Do I remove that trad for the new one?  Carry both?  Decisions, decisions albeit wonderful ones to have.

It's not just trads though, its also any new tool I get.  Fixed blades that I get are carried next day but kicking the current fixed blade that has performed so well off my belt seems strange.   Carry two?  Not realistic.

MTs is not a issued anymore but at one time it was a huge consideration when I was getting in new ones often.  I still have SAKs to consider as I get a new one from time to time that I want to try.

Seems every new to me tool should be carried so I do.  Anyone go through this wonderful scenario?

That is a very familiar feeling. I also like to immediately carry new tools and knives, but at the same time I want to also carry that other one I’ve been on a roll with. This does lead to very full pockets or mid day tool changes sometimes.
As a rule each new item gets at least two days before it is added to the rotation.

Remember that time we were happy to just have one and we always just carried it?

I have posted this same statement before:

Carry what makes you happy and meets your needs for the day.

That may vary from day to day. As new stuff comes. As old stuff goes. You might need a trusted tool. You might need that new tool you got yesterday for a specialized task. Something might catch your eye and call to you. You might change out midday as your needs change.

I used to get stressed out over what to carry. Seriously. So, I decided to my daily carry first on happiness and second on need. And, you’re right, we are fortunate to have this problem. (:

I definitely like to put anything new straight into my pocket and carry it for a few days at least.  Anything displaced will be brought out again at a later date. :)

Yes this is a thing.

Belt sheaths have become a thing for me since I started coming around here.

I sometimes carry the new stuff but sometimes I don't ::) :D

I have carried new things in my pockets for a day or 2 or even longer, only to go back to what I was carrying before because it worked better for me :salute: I have been surprised a few times by items and that is how they end up in the permanent edc :tu:

I have basically been carrying the same things for years... This does not stop me from buying newer tools. I generally know what I like and nothing exciting has occurred in the past decade.

I also have very limited pocket space, living in a hot climate area.

I do appreciate the responses, Thank you.

I love to carry new to me stuff in addition to not instead of  :D.  I've gone streamlined for a while on my off days now I'm wanting to carry lots of fun stuff.  I picked up some 5.11 pants and those extra pockets are great.  I use a similar type pant for work.  I tend to be a jeans wearer so 5 pockets for me on my off days.  Well 4 as my FLP is where I keep my wallet.

I have a bag and I've tried to carry it on off days but its not something I stick too.  In it are a Juice S2, 84mm Recruit, and Blackhawk belt cutter as far as tools.  So much fun stuff I tell ya.  I'm not humble bragging or complaining really.

Each new to me tool screams for attention and it must receive it  :P :D

I carry the same thing everyday so I'm kinda useless in this conversation.
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.
