Drilling the center pins/bushings 91mm
on: January 17, 2021, 07:10:13 AM
Hi I am new to modding and to the forum. I have just had success with my first simple mod by removing the fish scaler from a Swisschamp. My question is that since the 2.2mm pins are so hard to find, is there any reason I can't just drill out the holes and bushings to 2.5, making all pins the same size? Seems like an easier solution than trying to get them from overseas. Is there a problem I am overlooking? Seems to me that removing .3mm of material from the tools and bushings shouldn't affect them much, but what do I know?  :dunno: I tried searching but I am having problems with it saying to try again later.

Welcome to MTo!

I don't have any modding experience myself but others have drilled out pivots on 91mm tools to fit them into the 93mm frame. So I guess you should be fine :dunno:

It is possible but as the tools and springs are hardened stainless steel it’s tricky - plus you’ll need to drill the liners and modify the scales to accept the larger bushes.

Definitely easier to source the correct size brass rod for the pins.

On E-buy, 2.2mm brass is occasionally offered cheaply. Drilling to 2.5mm is also possible. Use hardened drills for this and make sure it doesn't get too hot.

Another way to drill hadened steel is using diamond coated drills on the dremel

Thanks for the input.  The sad part is my dad recently passed away and he worked for a precision Davenport lathe machine shop and could have easily acquired the stock and made bushings. They made all kinds of tiny, ultra precise parts. I found an ebay seller that sells 2.2 and 2.5 in 500mm lengths for about $5. It ships from China and will take a few weeks to arrive but 500mm should hold me for a good while.

Thank you very much. I will see how long the stock is taking from China and may take you up on that in the future.

Great info! Thanks for sharing, Reinier! I'm looking for 2.0mm nickel silver rods, let me know if you see it somewhere please. Thanks.
