Anyone here use the drinking straw container method?
on: September 02, 2021, 08:29:27 PM
As per the title really, for those unaware this is where you use pliers and a lighter to hot crimp the ends of a drinking straw to make custome length water proof containers.

Whilst binging the latest series of Alone I figured why not up my EDC preps a little? That walk to the store is nothing but wild tarmac  :ahhh

I'll get pics up later but so far I've made three:

- 3 strike anywhere matches

- 4.5-5 inches of jute twine for tinder

- Cottonball and vaseline tinder, took the cotton off either end of a q-tip, put one piece in the container, vaseline in the middle and the other piece of cotton on top. Squeeze it once sealed up to mixed them up! Really happy with how this one turned out.

Later on I'll be trying to put about one cut's worth of antiseptic ointment into one for my EDC booboo kit, all of this from a single Subway straw  :dunno:

So do you use this method? If so what for? I'm aware of putting things like salt, pepper, sugar and honey in them, but know there's a lot of possibilities I just haven't thought of!

I have used it for sunscreen and some other stuff.. What do you call it, the pills you dissolve in water to get salt and stuff back in balance after a hot sunny day or.. Long night with lot of beer.

I made some vaseline cotton balls in straws a long while ago. Still have one or two in various kits. I like the technique.   :tu:

Of course you did, I hadn't seen that one done before and was happy with myself

How well did you find such a small amount of cotton worked? I've tried whole cotton balls and that was, well kind of insane lighting off a single strike and burning alone for a couple of minutes until I put it out.

I’ve used it a few time.  I still have a few in emergency kits.

If they are items in my edc, small first aid kits or I think I may use; then I tend to go more with small reusable plastic containers, like ones made for ultralight hikers.

I do it for scissors.

For scissors or tweezers, I use a piece of guttted paracord in a similar way.

Using them for a sheath is a neat idea  :tu:

I want to use them to portion out antiseptic cream, I always see those neat single use sachets in US EDCs but I've never encountered them here to buy

Used up the last of my straw for the moment on more fire prep, I have one of those magnesium bars with the ferro rod glued to it, but shaving that when needed is both a pain and edge destroying. So I took the Rebar's file to the side of it and just scooped up the dust. Cut the corner for a controlled pour and save carrying a big block of magnesium to hate yourself with.

Since threads are nothing without pics:

Nice. I would just sugest you ID those with a magic marker, so you know what's inside them.

Glad to see the antiseptic idea is being well received, it's the only aspect that my booboo kits really lack   :tu:

Just had subway for lunch... paper straws

Great idea pf.   :tu:

Buying antiseptic in larger container then rationing into single use is a very good idea.

Use it? Well one could say I invented it :D

https://www.edcforums.com/threads/how-to-edc-needles.90014/#post-1118606

Mzil later popularized it on YouTube as single serving packs and liquid containers.

I have used this in the past for things like PotPerm & sugar as a firestarter, machine oil, and other such useful things. Generally I kept it to pen-length 'portions' of things, as going smaller was rarely enough to get the job done.

Half the time it was more hassle than it was worth to fill them up with various liquids and creams, and you'd probably waste more than you stored. Really if I need to EDC something like that, I'll likely need a bigger supply than just one or two single-use portions... I contemplated keeping a stock of certain things, for emergency/survival kits and the like, but again in such situations where your life may hang in the balance and you may be cold, wet, tired, hungry and injured, the absolute last thing you need is to be effing about with some fiddly, piddly little thumbnail-sized pack of firestarter...

Besides, Burger King stopped offering free plastic straws, so it was no longer financially worthwhile!!
