Bye-bye 84mm Slim Line
on: October 03, 2024, 03:06:48 PM
Hi Folks

Apologies if this has already been posted.

But it looks like the Excelsior is also now discontinued ...... It's not in the 2024 catalogue.
This seems to be in keeping with Victorinox's ever decreasing product line   >:D   >:(

If so, I think that marks the end of the 84mm 'slim' family: Excelsior, Pocket Pal, Secretary etc

These were nice compact pocket, handbag, desk (letter-opener?)  blade only models - I thought they were very attractive, elegant  and neat and quite unique  ,,,,
Must admit not my personal favourite as I prefer more tools for EDC ..... But a shame to see them go and useful in many situations I am sure    :(

Yes, the slim 84mm line is definitely discontinued. What a shame.
I really like this size to have a compact, light blade in my pocket and I find the shape very elegant

This is not a good path. It's sad to see a great company in decline.

Change doesn't have to be a sign of decline.  It might be.  It might not be.  I started to download the .pdf you left reference to in the SAK changes board.  I got a third-party site I didn't recognize and decided not to risk it.
I had one of those 84mm type knives ages ago.  Pocket pal, maybe?  I don't remember.  At the time I didn't like it.  Actually, I didn't much like any of the SAKs.  They were well made, but they didn't suit me then.  Then I found myself without a pocketknife, and remembered I had a SAK that I never had used.  That changed things.  Best wishes.  G

Yep - They'll be freeing up a lot of space in the factory 74mm, 84mm slim, 85mm - All gone

Making space for the new configurable and bladeless lines machinery  !!!     >:D    ;)

Yep - Hopefully the company is not in decline - But their product line certainly is ...... At least until new stuff arrives.

I am very sad about all this - But I guess rationalisation does make sense from a purely economic perspective, especially given the decline of, and increasing laws around, pocket knife/multitool carrying

I was very sad to see the Delémont 85mms go - If it was me I would have kept the Delémonts (maybe reducing models) and retired the 84mm Vic line - But just converted the alox Cadet to be 85mm

Yes I think it is decadence. Not everything in this life is about making money.
The pdf document is on 4shared and is publicly accessible.

Thanks for the information about the .pdf document, friend Gio.  That should be helpful for members wanting to figure out things about their SAKs.  I may revisit the site since my internet is functioning again.  Best wishes.  Gary (IMR)

Unfortunately it's simple economics; the lines that aren't producing income have to go. We all love them, but they're not making enough to support the lines of production. Vic is also facing a paradigm shift in whose carrying what - a lot of the current generation weren't brought up to carry a pocket knife, so they're taking an ever growing hit on that side as well (hence the diversification into kitchen tools and luggage).
