SHARPAL sharpener and survival tool. Coarse and fine blade sharpeners, a rod for serrated blades and gut hooks and there's a fishhook sharpener on there as well. There's also a whistle and fire starter. Just in case. :)

I'm pretty sure that's what I need.  :D

My Hunter got some time in today. Sawed off a protruding ventilation sticker from a lumber stack.

Sak hard, y'all.

That's the biggest reason I'm keeping the Hunter even after my [mine-mine-mine] SwissChamp arrives....along with the long main blade, the lock, and the serrated hook blade. All of which the SC does not have. The Ranger will probably be kicked to the curb.....

It's an excellent knife Jim.  I love that harness cutter.

 :o

It's actually for slicing open the belly of your game animal, to remove the bowels without puncturing them.... (That's what makes it a Hunter, not, oh, a rescue knife or something).  8)

But it could be used for cutting seat belts or other things, too, of course....

Yeah, not to be too gross or anything, but when you kill an animal and you field dress it, you need to get the guts out fast so they don't spoil the meat. Especially in warmer weather, but even in colder weather. Plus, gutting the animal will leave 20-40% of the weight behind, making it easier to carry or drag out of the woods. So you would start with a very careful incision with a sharp pointed blade, in the center line of the belly area (depending on species, this may vary a little in practice, but for deer and other ruminants this is generally the case), then, if you have a gutting blade on you, you use it to slice a line up the belly. The blunt tip of the gutting blade allows it to slide under the skin without puncturing the entrails. If you do puncture the entrails, well, you potentially allow anything in them (partially processed food, you know, etc.) to come out all over the meat. And you want to avoid that if possible, because you want to keep your meat clean. Not to mention it's unpleasant.

The Victorinox Hunter features the curved, serrated blade, intended for this purpose. As I said before, it can also be used as rescue knife blade. But it isn't as long as a typical rescue blade, and in some cases, may not reach far enough under a seat belt to get to the other side in one pass.

Some hunting knives use a gut hook, an actual V-shaped hook, for the same gutting purpose. I don't remember seeing any Victorinox model with that type of gut hook, but I'm still learning about them, so I could be wrong. But the Hunter does not have one.

I've never gone hunting with this knife, but come to think of it, I think the reamer/awl would do nicely to make the initial hole, into which one would proceed to insert the gut hook. Never thought of that before....

111 Wednesday coincided with the 30 SAKs in 30 days challenge, so I'll post this in both.  A side locking Adventurer that I've had for a long time.  It was used, and had a few dings in the edge, which I mostly got out of it.

Since I don't have any more 111's other than my Hunter, which I've posted a good bit about, I'll refrain from posting any pictures in this category today.

Pretty much any 111 I keep will almost certainly be a slide locker. Not a fan of liner locks, and the Vic liner locks are especially obtuse.

How do you guys carry the 111mm? Normal sheath or drop it in your pocket?

I carry mine in a belt sheath.

The top 111 is a Fireman,the side-lock version.

Compared to a Hunter,it may be a better tool than the Hunter due to its longer gutting/belt cutter blade.

I have one of the cloth Vic sheaths.  I only have 2 111s right now, and both of them ride in that sheath.  The mighty Workchamp definitely does!

I took the 111 out for a spin for a few days in the woods and boy am I glad I did. :ahhh

After our recent 30DC I decided that it was too much knife for me, but that was me just doing laps between work and home.  I'd become rather annoyed with the bottle opener, which was preventing me from quickly and easily accessing the innards of my bottles without putting up a fight

But I've been since been reacquainted with the OHO blade and put it to good use.  This will be my go-to for outdoor adventures for the foreseeable future. Even though its more blade than I normally need, with cold slippery hands, the 111 was better than the 93.  and that's an advantage.
