The knife I made
on: January 16, 2009, 05:15:27 PM
Dudes and dudesses,

I knocked this knife up yesterday at a mates house (he has a gas fired forge, belt grinders, bench sanders etc....all the kit you need)

The blade started as a straight rectangle bar of flat stock and the handle was a block of stabilised wood (maple burr).

After about 4.5 hours of sanding, gluing, grinding and splinter induced curses (including 1 hour where it was tempering in the oven whilst we went the pub for a meal ) this is what I came up with.

It has the handle of a bushcraft knife but the blade tip of a kiridashi with a straight tanto edge.

The only problem was when I used a pillar drill to drill the metal of my semi finished blade for the lanyard hole.  The drill bit got caught in the metal and whipped it out of my hand whereby it became a spinning wheel of death  :ahhh

Yes I got cut, but every good knife need a feed whilst being created  >:D

Now all I need to do is make my sheath.

Any ideas for a name

I say call it a "Jump Back". I imagine when that bit took hold you jumped back pretty far.

Very nice Job.  Absolutely a beautiful wood handle on that.

Have made a couple of blades myself from old mill bandsaw blades.  Have a friend who has a small forge so he gave me a lesson on this aspect of making them.  Doesn't look as nice as yours though.

I guess you could call your knife to use your words "wheel of death" (WOD) if you want to shorten it.  After all when people ask why that name you will get to tell the story behind it. :)

Is this the first knife you've made?  It looks very good. Its nice to see something a bit different in the blade shape.

Next time, clamp your work  :twak:

Hope you heal up fast :)

Neil
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.
