Old Hickory Kephart mod I did

I really love these old style knives.  I need to do some work and a few still.  Ontario Knife company has a 120+ year history and Old Hickory 90+ years.  I've been very happy with my OH and used then in my kitchen at one point.  They have since been moved to storage.

I've enjoyed my OH Kephart mod as my yard knife but not as much these days.  I decided to take them out and I'm glad I did.  I've give them a light scrub with 0000 steel wool then a nice coat of beeswax.

Thanks.  I really like this style knife a lot.  120+ years and going strong.  Great way to pick up a knife that will do quite a bit from camping to bushcraft to dare I say survival.  Yeah ya got to take care of them cause they will rust ( as you can see ) but with regular use or a really good patina not too much to worry about.

If you have a flea market near I'm sure these can be picked up for $5 and under which is a good price.  I think the most I paid was $5 but I doubt it.  Bet the whole lot cost me less than $25.  Sure none came with sheaths but they can be found for a decent price or you can make your own.

All the knives shown seem to be well heat treated.  All very easy to get razor sharp too.  If you are a carbon steel lover these would be a fun knife to get and fool around with.

Thanks for looking.

Nice assortment of fixed blade work knives.

The blade shape of the fourth from the left is what I remember using on the farm!

My grandpa had a box of old knives from before I was born. Used for trimming celery and cutting sweet corn from the stalks for sale at his road side stand.  Then used to cut the dried corn stalks at end of the season to sell as decorations along with the pumpkins.

Then what was left, I would after school sat in then shed fire up the stove and slit the corn stocks searching for corn borers in prep of ice fishing season at first of the new year when ice was thick enough in southwestern Michigan.

When I was 10 maybe 11, Grandpa bought a new batch of knives, similar blade shape as #4,  but with squared blocks of wood for handles. And blades were not sharpened. 10 knives for $5 I recall was the price.
I was tasked with whittling the handles, rounding them for hand holds. Drill for a nail hole or loop of string. Then he would sharpen, then add to the box. The old worn knives thrown in the burn pit or placed in a tool box for a pry tool of sorts.

After grandpa passed away, my dad took over as a hobby and grew veggies for 15 plus years.
When he sold the property, he burned everything he thought was useless, including awl those knives🥹. He hated clutter and despised anything to do with his days trimming celery back in the day.

For me good memories, time spent working along my grandpa and getting coffee and sweets from grandma.  Hunting rabbits and pheasants, along with trapping muskrats along the drainage ditches. AWL when life was simpler and the sky was a DEEP BLUE THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER DAYS. 😁

That is what your picture reminds me of, thank you.

If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

I'm really late to this thread but they really take me back.  I remember my grandparents having and using knives just like that on their farm.  Nice collection Aloha!

Thanks.  Glad it took you back.  Its funny, I got into these early but they faded away from my focus.  Then when I got into traditional knives these knives came back to my focus.  I really appreciate them cause man these are users.
