Can't go wrong giving a tool a quick wipe down with a WD-40 dampened clean rag.

I prefer CRC 6-66 over WD40, although I do use both. Just seems to be that little bit better against surface rust.

Like smaller posted a thin coat of W-D40 works well. A thin coat will leave a varnish like coat of protection. If left wet it turns to a sticky mess.
I think Alcohol, Tabacco and Firearms should be a convenience store, not a government agency.
