Replacing skeletool knife blade with something else U.K. legal

Hi,

I’m new to this forum and also relatively new to the joys of multitools.

I currently carry a SAK Swiss champ which slips into my pocket and remains unnoticed by me until I need it. Much to my surprise, I find that the Swiss champ is used for one thing or another daily.  As great as it is, I’m finding it frustrating in terms of pliers as the pliers on the Swiss champ are woeful for bigger jobs, so I have turned to the world of plier multitools to find one which will complement my Swiss champ.

After much searching over the weekend, I invested in a leatherman skeletool as I didn’t really want a pliers multitool that duplicates the tools on my Swiss champ. I love the fact that it is light weight and would also slip into the pocket and be forgotten about until use. The fact that it has interchangeable bits was also a massive bonus.  One problem that I have though is that I’m in the U.K. so can’t carry it around as it currently is.

I would like to swap out the knife blade for some other tool such as a metal file or ruler but not sure where I would look for any of the aforementioned tools that would fit the skeletool.

Any suggestions from anyone? Constructive suggestions obviously!

Thanks

Matt

Hi there,  I'll be following this one with great interest.
 I'm also a Skeletool carrier.
It's a great tool and I have one for work as well as one for daily  carry.

I was thinking of removing the blade and fitting a pair of scissors.

Any way, good luck can't wait go see how you get on.

Cheers.

Welcome to :MTO:  Matty

I am wondering if the diamond file of a Wave might fit right in there  they both are liner locks,  so should work

Hope you are able to find something that works out for you :salute:

That's a great idea!  I wonder if the scissors from a Wingman or Surge would fit or how much modding would be needed to fit Victorinox scissors?

The pliers on the Skeletool are light duty only, I've broken them before. Might be worth keeping in mind.

I’ve been having a look on YouTube and found a bloke who unscrewed the bolts holding the tools to a wave in place. He then added a very thin washer in order to hold on the liner lock, replaced the screws and had effectively turned his blade into a non locking folder, making it U.K. legal.  I think that this might be the way to go. Going to pop down to my local diy shop later and see if they have any T9 torques which is what I will need, one for each side of the multitool. The nice thing is that the mod can be reversed easily enough too.

Will let you know how I get on!

So, I went to my local DIY shop this morning g and bought two torque T10s which is what I needed to do the project.

After fiddling around with the screws,  I managed to get the knife blade off and spent the next half an hour, after finding an appropriately sized washer, trying to slime the holes of the side of the tool that I’d dismantled. I realised that you can’t align the holes when the tool is in its closed position, so open one of the arms to allow the holes to be aligned before trying to slot the knife blade back in to the other part of the tool.

However, it was all worth it as I now have a U.K. legal carry, light weight awesome multitool which I will barely notice carrying, along with my Swiss champ.

Here are some pics of what it looks like. I have shown where the position of one of the list arms needs to be when re aligning the holes.

Of course, none of this would be necessary were it not for the U.K. bizarre knife law. As though a locking blade is going to stop knife crime, but there we go I guess.

Now going to anticipate the arrival of my nylon double layered leatherman sheath plus bit kit and driver extension. After that, I can strut around town with confidence! lol

I thought there was a mod on Shapeways or elsewhere that set one up to hold a filed down house key. Ill have to check back if I can find the video/link.
