Picked up these 6 knives
on: February 25, 2021, 05:18:12 PM
Hello,

I picked up 6 knives for a really low price (50€ / ~$61) & I wanted to share this and also wondering for the Wenger what model this is.
They are all in mint condition, soldier from 2017 is brand new.

On the first pic from left to right :

- Soldier 2017
- Soldier 1980 (Wenger)
- Waiter "economy" (84mm) Wonder if anyone can date this one too? (it has Victorinox Switzerland... on tang and crossbow on the other side)
- Wenger (with original box) : I'm not an expert for Wenger's,does anyone have an idea what model this is?
- Executive (74mm) old scissors (before 1975)
- Executive (74mm) old scissors (before 1975) & old tweezers with silver head

It is a Backpacker II.  The distinguishing feature from the Backpacker is the corkscrew instead of the back side Phillips.  Note that they were sold both with and without the backpacker emblem on the scales.

Nice score!   :tu:

The changeover date for 74mm scissors is in the early ‘80s. Assuming the correct tweezers on both, they are likely mid-late ‘70 and late ‘70s/early ‘80s.

For the Waiter, it’s post ‘86 for the big ‘V’ in the tang stamp. Which is consistent with the Combo Tool style which changed shortly before that. And the 90° stop came shortly before that in the original Combo Tool shape.

On SAKWiki it says scissors' spring changed in 1975 : https://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Scissors

Yeah, well, the wiki is incorrect. Or just not updated yet.

Double leafs show up in ‘70 in most 91mm knives. Some of which can be found with shackles. Even earlier in 58mm with the old-style scissors. I think the last 58mm single leafs aren’t even black-oxide.  But 74mm hung on to the single leafs until the changeover to the new style in the early ‘80s. 84mm which never got a modern update changed over to double leaf c.’70 too.

Alright Thanks  :tu:

  You’re welcome.  :)

We just need somebody to ‘Champion’ the effort to make the updates and get group input on it.

This was excellent timing.  The knife below arrived in the mail today.  With a little 'v', old combo style, and a 90 degree stop, would that put it around 1985?

(Image removed from quote.)
I think thereabouts. But I recall reading differently.

And my post about that should say ‘previous Combo Tool’ not ‘original’. AFAIK, the 90° stop comes in the 2nd shape style, not the 1st.
