Favorite SAK by Layer.
on: March 01, 2021, 04:11:45 PM
I was thinking about my favorite SAKs by layer and it is odd that I prefer different styles in different layers.  Anyway here are mine up to 5 layers

1-Bantam Alox (84mm)
2-Tinker (91mm)
3-Climber (91mm)
4-Deluxe Tinker (91mm) (This one is the hardest because the Huntsman is very very close)
5-Ranger (91mm)

Nice topic.  Can I suggest putting the size next to the models?  I'm still a bit model/size illiterate, plus some names seem to exist for more than one.

I'll come up with my list and post, too.
My Mods: 58mm Workshop, 91mm Picnicker, CyberCompact
Some Fav's: long nail file models, vintage unusual stainless
Quirk: I like the metal file more than the wood saw

Agree with FB, this is an interesting topic!

1 layer  = 84mm Waiter
2 layers = 91mm Compact
3 layers = 91mm Yeoman/Climber (Climber being a close second)
4 layers = 91mm Mountaineer/Explorer (Explorer is a close second)
5 layers = 91mm Modeler
6 layers = 91mm Handyman
49 layers = 85mm Wenger Giant

(thanks FB for the Giant inspiration, and for anyone interested there's a Mad Max challenge ongoing where the Wenger Giants are featured)

Waiter, Compact and Yeoman, since they have some of the highest density of tools in small package.

Climber/Mountaineer/Explorer, since they all have scissors.  Explorer is one of the slimmest with inline philips which I really like.

Modeler, it features pretty much most of my well loved tools in one chassis.  Small/Large blade, scissors, inline philips, openers and metal file/saw.  Too bad it's discontinued.

Handyman is just what I like most in terms of tool sets, never too big a fan of fish scaler and have no real use for cybertool bit adapter.

Neat idea for a topic!

Here's mine:
1 - Alox Bantam (84mm)
2 - Compact (91mm)
3 - Climber (91mm)
4 - Farmer X (93mm), but Deluxe Tinker (91mm) is running a very close 2nd right now
5 - Cyber Tool M (91mm)

Alox Bantam is a lot of capability in an extremely slim package.  I keep mine in my wallet as a backup.

I'd take a Climber over a Compact any day, but in terms of packing the most useful tools into two layers, the Compact is where it's at.

Climber is simply the most useful tools that can be had in three layers.  'Nuff said.

Farmer X has been my go-to hiking and camping SAK since I got it, but I just got a(nother) Deluxe Tinker, and I want to try carrying it in place of my Cyber Tool M...

Cyber Tool M is extremely capable, and perhaps the ultimate urban/suburban tool.  (While technically a 5-layer knife, the bit driver layer is about the thickness of two standard layers, so the CT-M is closer in thickness to a standard 6-layer SAK.)  It is so thick that I actually find it a bit awkward in hand when using some of the tools (e.g. knife blades).  Also, while I'm generally a fan of the opener layer over the combo tool, I think Victorinox missed an opportunity to slim this knife down a bit by not going the combo tool route; with the bit driver and bits to handle any screws, there would not be significant loss of functionality.

I don't carry any SAKs above five layers, so I'll stop there.

Great topic!   :tu:

1 layer: 84mm Waiter (Alox, mid-‘70s)
2 layers: 84mm Golfer (mid-‘70s, probably not what you’re thinking)
3 layers: 91mm Marlboro - The Trail Guide
4 layers: 84mm Craftsman 136ka
5 layers: 84mm Master Craftsman 136kmaU Hoffritz Explorer
6 layers: 91mm Champion (my original ‘84)
7 layers: 91mm ‘86 SwissChamp

But by recent use:
1 layer: 58mm Signature Lite
2 layers: 91mm McKinley (60% Serrated Tinker)
3 layers: 91mm Camper
4 layers: 91mm Fieldmaster (but this is being rotated out for an 84mm ‘73 Craftsman)
5 layers: 91mm Troubleshooter
6 layers: 91mm Troublemaker (Troubleshooter+Lite Mod)
7 Layers: 91mm Champ

Keeping it to cellidor only to make my life easier:

1 - Waiter (84mm)
2 - Compact (91mm)
3 - Trail Guide (91mm)
4 - Huntsman (91mm)
5 - Modeler (91mm)
6 - Handyman (91mm)

I chose the 84mm Waiter only because I don’t own—despite years of searching—a 91mm Waiter Plus.

The only tough choice was the 5-layer model. It was a toss-up between the Modeler and the Master Craftsman.

3. Climber
4. FarmerX …or Huntsman   :ahhh
5. Ranger

Favorite that I have, or favorite that I want?

Goodness gracious.

1. Have: Sentinel Clip Serrated. (Don't want to keep it).   1. That I want: Not a fan of 1-layer SAK's.
2. Have: Tinker.   2. Want: Not a huge fan of 2-layer SAK's, but I like my Tinkers and Spartans kicking around.
3. Have: Farmer.    3. Want: Uh... i like lots of 3-layer knives, have Super Tinker, Climber, Camper, Hunter. Can't think what I would like more....
4. Have: (coming) Fieldmaster.   4. Want: Deluxe Tinker?
5. Have: Ranger .   5. Want: TRADESMAN. This is actually my holy grail knife.
6. Don't  have.    6. Want: Late Craftsman with pliers.
7. Have: (Under repair) Champion. Want: CTL
8. Just Sold: Swiss Champ. Want: Swiss Champ.
11. Not real excited about getting an 11-layer one, but hey.
This life is merely a staging ground for eternity. Are you preparing for the rest of forever?

Sorry Sos! I misunderstood your intent there.

...

This thread is so much better than any thread asking about your ONE favorite knife. Even if it does narrow the scope in some way.  I can’t ever seem to whittle an answer down to one.  :dunno:

Even the what to grab in a fire situation...I mean I have two hands and can grab like 5 in each.  :D
