This is crazy. While I totally get the fascination for LEs in principle and for the damast knives in particular, I still think that every LE should at least theoretically be a user. If I carried and used, say, a Man on the Moon Tinker, a connoisseur of SAKs who saw me might think: "Wow, he uses a MotM - he must be well-off." In the case of the damast Swiss Champ, that same connoisseur would undoubtedly think: "Wow, he uses a damast SC - he must be insane."If a LE costs twice, three times or even four times as much as the base model, one can still somehow justify using it. But if it costs 12 times as much, there simply is no relationship whatsoever between the LE and the SAK on which it is based. If I had one of the damast SCs, the thought of ever using it would be inconceivable. I would obviously have to maintain it in pristine condition and contend myself with admiring it once in a while (better not touch it though; you might get it stained or scratched) before eventually re-selling or leaving it to my heirs. Where is the fun in that? It's a real pity: such a nice tool and no way anyone in their right mind will ever put it to use...
You can see one here: https://sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=CybertoolThis one lives in China and belongs to xfile who is a member here There's also a couple more images in the CT gallery
Looks like the rumours were true!!https://altofilo.com/tienda/ols/products/swiss-champ-damasco-29-funciones-edicion-limitada-2021-cachas-de-carbono-victorinox?fbclid=IwAR2oOeNBGR_IPjnr4QaAjPJRzxBVXSFkRvm6VgwRS3cePa19TyZr3l1gEQcWhat a beauty! Currency looks like Mexican Pesos so that is about $600 USD ..... Too pricey for me
One final (?) observation.Would you rather have one Damascus SwissChamp or two of these ...- Yep when they came out, if you shopped around, you could get one for $300Is Vic gettting greedy? I also wonder about the markup - Let's say average wholesale to retail markup is 50%So for a regular SC the retailer is making say $40 - For the Damascus $300 ..... For the same amount of work!! Hmmm ...... Note I have no idea if the markup % is anywhere near accurate !!
Agree with you once again Sir Simon. It's a shame - I do remember that someone here used the Damascus Explorer as an EDC - which was great to hear However the price hike from regular to Damascus model seems to be increasing! And of course the resale value of these thjings is crazy - So the likeihood of Damascus models ever being users is now non existent I'd say. Interesting point here - If you agree they should/could be users, which I do in principle - Then the Vic kitchen Damascus knives are a much better bet. You use them in a much safer and cleaner environment, with less chance of getting damaged, bashed up, scratched or, worst of all, lost!SAKs, as EDC multitools, are in a very precarious, tough environment, if you want to keep them pristine.Re the kitchen knves as users ....... that's iff you can afford them of course. I had to buy a new bread knife recently - My old one was complete rubbish - I would have loved the Vic Damascus but it's totally overpriced - Even the Opinel is pretty expensive in OzSo I did a bit of research/surfing and found a Japanese one that got great reviews for about $25 which is absolutely awesome!! Taught me a lesson - actually! EDIT PS: We just included the kitchen models in the Vic Damascus page in the Wikihttps://sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Victorinox+Damascus+Limited+EditionsI hope that is OK with everyone - as of course they are not SAKs - But I thought they were worth a mensh.
The Swisschamp is the only tool I brought when I went to China as a postgraduate. Except for a few screwdrivers, it was the only tool I had when I left two years later (too bad it got lost during the move). It really can substitute a whole toolbox if you have to travel light or are on a budget. It just begs you to use it and to be amazed by what it can do. I find it cruel to deprive it from this.
Who wants real carbon when forged will do??!!
Better hurry, guys, there are only 5998 out of 6000 left!
Great to hear it, Guillaume!
