I could not pick one up in the UK as the allocation was less than 1,000pcs and sold out in a few hours.

The UK allocation was lower than normal. From what I've been told the main stock went across europe.

FB -  yes, Red Hill was who I bought from.  Here’s mine, I have a lot of the very fine layers, especially on the backside.   I’m very happy with this run!

I asked the dealer the question a few years ago, as many Victorinox models , are cheaper in the US. There seems to be some agreement lowering the taxes on these items, I was told.

Within the EU Swiss products are taxed, as they are in the US so we pay mere tax than they do in the US for them.

EMZ, I think the prices you see on American websites are misleading. They add sales tax at the checkout, whereas in Europe sales tax is already included in the sticker price. I think sales tax varies from state to state but it's an extra 10% or so.

Well, not owning a SwissChamp, or a real damast blade (etched CRKT Obake doesn't count), I think I did well to resist ordering one this long.  Until today!  I have solved both problems in one fell swoop. It's now on its way, I'm excited to see this beauty in RL!
Further to the pricing discussion, I'm in Canada where we are taxed usually much higher than the US.  Mine was listed at $480 CAD it came to $542.40 after tax.  The exchange on 429 Euros today is $634 CAD, so a fair bit cheaper here.
