Backspring nail file on 84mm
on: March 02, 2021, 03:52:58 PM
I wanted a 2-layer 84mm SAK with scissors and both the bottle opener and the nail file. Since my chances of finding an affordable LNF Golfer are slim, I investigated the possibility of adding a nail file as a backspring tool. Some have reported success fitting 58mm tools there, but I found that even the 84mm version from a Sportsman will work with a little reprofiling. I removed the tang and thinned the sides, leaving the file area untouched. It took a little trial and error to get the tip to sit below the scales, but I'm very pleased with the result. So here it is: the poor man's LNF (and you can even file your nails without opening it).

That's not exactly what she said, but she may have implied something along those lines

Very nice! That's my favourite tool combo as well, it's like a rambler on steroids! ;)

What's the backspring you used for the Wenger scissors and the file?

In this thread, PTRSAK took the blade layer spring from an older recruit: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,41486.0.html

I assume you took the normal blade layer spring from a tinker small or tourist, is that correct?

That's exactly the instructions I applied for the scissors, using a blade backspring and a blade tang as the rest. I've done it a few times now and I find that it gives too much tension for my taste, so in addition I file off a little material (about 0.5mm) either from the backspring or from the rest. The backsprings were from my parts bin, so I couldn't say if they were from a Waiter, Tourist, Sportsman or Small Tinker but as far as I can tell they're all the same...
