>> First try on a DIY pocket caddy <<
on: October 30, 2020, 09:34:35 AM
I've had my first try at a self made sheath. A pocket caddy for the back pockets of my jeans.

I've added a tiny slot in the middle for a SAK scale tool too. I have a Tortoise Firefly in there for now, but any scale tool would fit.

The stitching part hurt the most  ;)
It's not perfect but sturdy and reliable.

Yeah, I could have chosen a slightly thinner material maybe to make things easier  :D

I'll add more pics and feedback on how it fares later on  :salute:

Tools used: Scalpel set, thick needle, fork (to mark the stich pattern...saw that trick in one of Steves posts), Spirit X awl (slightly modified to make it pointier), some thread I found in the missus stiching kit (took 8 threads a time), a plaster for one of my fingers  :dunno:

Its fun to do and you get what you want by doing it yourself.  If any changes are wanted you can make the needed adjustments or make a new one.  Each time you get better and better.

Looks great.   :like:

I thought you needed the thread for yourself... :shrug;

Seriously though. Wish my first caddy came out that well.
It's currently fading away in the drawer of shame.

A first test on a walk went very well.
It stays straight in the pocket, doesn't turn sideways. And the wider SAK scale tool area in the middle provides enough flexibility to make it form around my bum like...   ... you know what...

No pics though, sorry  :-\

So I think it's ready for the new Spirit that I'm waiting to be delivered soon  :ahhh

I've made another caddy in the same style, for the Wave.

...LM Wave & 1 AA/14500 Flashlight...

What I've not shown before is this nice feature.
The clip can be left on the flashlight, it fits right into the gap of the pocket sides  :tu:

To test the design I've made some paper models before...

... and used staples that I could remove afterwards...

Still, because the thick leather doesn't bent as easy as the thin paper does I had to add some to the overall size.

Looks like you did a good job on the Spirit and the Wave pouches.  My reasons for making my pocket scabbard were keeping my tools upright in my pocket and preventing them from wearing through the pockets. My pocket scabbard is not as elaborate as yours, as I just made one big pocket rather than two separate pockets, but if your issues were the same as mine then I think you will find the results quite satisfactory.  I like the slot in the middle but I'd have probably made it wide enough for a pen.

Thanks Alan  :hatsoff:

Yes, that's what I made them for. I do also worry about scratching up a BO tool unnecessarily, therefore separate pockets. I'm quite happy with the results and they work as intended.
Now they just need to last.

You're right about the pen. I was also thinking if I could fit a bit-extender in the middle. But the caddy would have been a bit too wide for my taste then. So I've decided to add a space for the SAK scale tools.

Btw, I have a pen in there currently. It's one for a SwissCard (because the head is symmetrical it looks nicer). Did you know that they're pressurised like a Fisher Space Pen?

Anyhow, any scale tool will fit...
