Ohio SB 140 Knife Reform Law, not what you think!
on: March 14, 2021, 11:18:33 PM
I read here about all the stupid laws regarding knives.  I just read an article in my town paper (Pickerington Times-Sun) about Ohio Senate Bill 140 that goes in effect April 12 here in Ohio.

Quote from the paper (bold emphasis mine): SB 140 repeals a statewide ban on the manufacture and sale of automatically opening pocket or folding knives and defines any knife or cutting instrument as a weapon only if it is used as a weapon.  That new designation will allow carrying any knife concealed under state law.

My first thought when my wife handed me the paper was "oh no, now I can't carry my SAK in Ohio".  Glad to see some common sense regarding knives for a change.

Interesting; sounds logic to me.  I wonder how many other states will follow? Thanks for posting.  :tu:

There has actually been a fair amount of progress made over the years.  Though they are not as well-known or well-funded as some other special interest groups, there are organizations in the US fighting for more common sense knife laws.  Two that I am aware of are

Knife Rights - https://kniferights.org/

The American Knife & Tool Institute (AKTI) - https://www.akti.org/

Both organizations keep running lists of efforts in which they have been involved (obviously, there is at least some overlap):

Knife Rights was mentioned in the article as having testified for the bill.

That's great to hear.

Thankfully, South Carolina, where I live, has very few restrictions on knives, and basically anyone can carry any knife at any time, openly or concealed. Of course they are not allowed in primary education schools, courtrooms, airport terminals, and so on.
This life is merely a staging ground for eternity. Are you preparing for the rest of forever?

It's great to hear that something useful is actually happening out there.

I have known Doug Ritter for many years, and in fact the first iteration of Kniferights.org was built by one of our site techs, Esteban Soler, aka Mcniac.  For those keeping track, Esteban also built MTO initially, so we wouldn't exist without him either.    :tu:

It's so rare that we can discuss a new official policy somewhere in the world in a positive light!  Good for Ohio!  Now let's hope every other government follows that example.
