Am I expecting too much from my Surge?
on: March 18, 2021, 04:00:08 PM
Hi Guys,

Keen to hear your thoughts on this one, I was using the flat head screwdriver from the bit driver to unscrew a pretty tight screw whilst doing some DIY at home.

I was surprised a bit at how easily I managed to twist the screwdriver bit. A bit frustrating but at least that part can be easily replaced, especially since there are a few other teething issues with my Surge.

I think the photos speak for themselves and Ive added a few glamour shots since I still love it  :D

Cheers,
Tom

I suppose it's better that the bit twisted than the holder breaking   :dunno:

I've sheared off the tips of the No.10 torx a couple of time now and twisted the flat head the same as you.  I like that they give before the holder breaks.  It 's a shame they can't be bought individually though.

I 100% agree with you guys, better to damage the bit as opposed to tool itself I guess but I didn't expect it to fail at a task that I thought a "heavy duty" tool should manage with.

@Wspeed I never had any issues with my Wave but my first Surge rattled like a baby's toy and my second from warranty has a fair bit of back and forth play in the blades. Its supposed to be used so I don't mind too much...

 :iagree:

That said it is a bit disappointing.  I have used my bits quite a lot and not had this happen.   :dunno:

I agree with what's been said about twisting before breaking.

I did not manage to twist or break any of my LM bits yet though.

What I find is that the bigger and heavier the handle, the less you feel how much force you are putting into that tiny bit.

You've got that right. It IS a BIT, disappointing.

Sorry. Couldn't resist. I'll be here all week. Tip your waitress.

I have twisted a bit before (and I'm not talking about my dancing days  ).
You could say it's a failing of the bits rather than the Surge.

I prefer to have flat drivers on the tool rather than use bits.

Thank you. :hatsoff:  Another member on the other side of the world kindly sent me the medium flat screwdriver from an ST300.  :tu:
https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,78588.0.html

EDIT: Actually, looking at the rough surface of my small flat screwdriver has reminded me that it got twisted too and I filed it roughly back into shape. So I guess no better than the bits after all.  :dunno:

I can see it now in the photo actually.

I'll save the hardest jobs for a dedicated tool from now on I guess.  :dunno:
