Vic 111mm slidelock in space
on: March 23, 2021, 08:49:15 AM
Hi folks,

not sure if it has been discussed here before, if so, just ignore.

Been reading Wikipedia (you know, reading something and then venturing further and further. started with the MIR (which was send to earth 20years ago) and continued with the ISS).

and what do I see?

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internationale_Raumstation#/media/Datei:Meal_STS127.jpg

Astronauts eating with a 111mm Slidelock knife which appears to be 4 layers is floating in space.
Model? Not sure.

Great find! I just love it when SAKs go to space. Something about that particular SAK looks odd though. All of the tools appear very recessed, as if the large blade were missing (in its closed state it protrudes quite a bit from the frame)

I see what you mean, but still, it looks a lot like an Outrider. The blade looks the same as mine when I look at it at the same angle. I think I can make out the scissors and Phillips as well. So I'd say: Outrider.

Just been thinking about that a bit.

As far as I know (read) they use tools/knifes in space for opening their food packages and food cans.
They have scissors (and knifes and forks and spoons) in their mealkit and I am sure they have some can opener up there.
Other than that, knives are used a lot for small tinkering and personal use (scissors mainly).

Apart from that, what tools do you need when in a cramped, technical environment?
Small pliers? Maybe. File? I guess thats dangerous (small particles floating around, clogging filters, may cause short circuits...). The same is for the saw, cant imagine having lots of uses besides some theoretical use in survival situation when returning to earth went SHTF.

Making a list of tools I might take no 111mm knife is on the top5 or even top10.

Cybertools might be nice, a PST (PST2) would be great, too. Or the Craftsman. Or Deluxe Tinker.
But never an Outrider.

No Cybertools because of the small bits

I think the Master Craftsman was an official issue (still is?). Also, when you look around in the ISS on Google Earth you can find more SAKs and multitools (see photo).

I've seen a pic of the Craftsman, too, in the ISS.  The Master Craftsman has been the official issue since 1984, and I've even read that the Leatherman Wave has made the trip.

:like: I went and traded out my Swisschamp for my Master Craftsman after reading this.
