Compact or Golfer?
on: March 15, 2021, 09:24:10 PM
Picked this up from eBay. I saw the pics and it is the knife I wanted, but confused as to what it really is?

Brand new. At least sold that way and sure looks it!

But the box says GOLFER. So wrong box or what?

Again, happy with the purchase. It was the toolset I wanted.

I would say it's a Compact with wrong box due to the next facts:
1. It has a hook (even with nail-file)
2. It has transparent scales

Not sure I can add much, but my first thought is that it is an early Compact that was put into a late Golfer box.
It could be possible that since it's an evolved Golfer, Victorinox didn't mind using up the Golfer boxes for it.  :dunno:
Rest in peace ColoSwiss, you will always be remembered.

:iagree: With what the rest have said - just checked my 1991 Golfer and there is no hook/nail file, and the scissors have a screw not a rivet. However, I see yours still has the round mini-screwdriver which my Golfer lost when it went back to Victorinox to fix a very loose screw on the scissors- the original round mini-screwdriver got replaced with the newer hexagonal one....

The good news is that it’s a great looking knife!

The bad news it that there are a LOT of inconsistencies.

The knife is a Compact that was built ‘05 or later. The ‘solid’ rear scale was moulded in ‘00. All the factory installed ones I’ve seen from ‘99-‘00 come with the toothpick ‘hook’ for dip switches. Front scale is ‘05. I can see (and read) both clock marks on the interior of the scales. And I’ve never seen factory scales more than a year apart since they’ve been visibly coded like this.

Those rear scales are available from Doris in *bay NOS. So I’m pretty sure that scale came from her shop.

Boxes weren’t name labeled directly with a stamp like that since well earlier.

So I think the box and rear scale aren’t original to this knife which looks factory assembled.

Ok. Lots of good info.

Luckily for me, when I bought this, I just wanted a Compact. Didn’t really care about when it was from as it advertised as NOS from 90’s.

So someone fibbed, but I got the Compact I wanted, for a decent price. So good for me!!!  Haha

Thanks again for the info!!!

Well, really not surprised coming from their shop. There have been other ‘Golfers’ sold with similar boxes. Like a couple of LNF ones, which as I’ve said, were never actually Golfers. Those went for some coin...

Maybe they made their own stamp!

But you got a nice one at a decent price for new condition. Those solid scales are my favorite Plus scales and I spot them from a mile away.

FWIW here is a picture of my Golfer that I bought at retail circa 91-94 (don't remember exact year).  Being a golfer it stays in my golf bag.  I don't often use it because I really only need a ballmark repair tool and I have smaller, lighter versions.  It is however nice having extra tools about though so it stays tucked away.  I used it just today.

Pen, tweezers, toothpick and small glasses (slotted screwdriver) are extras.  Blade, scissors and ball mark repair tool on the one side, corkscrew and hook on the other.  Picture isn't great, but it gives a real good idea of what a classic, red Golfer looks like and the tools on it.
